Nittany Athletic Teams Face Big Day
Grid, Golf, Tennis Squads
Perform Before Local Fans
Weather cooperating, six of Penn State’s varsity teams
will see action today with football, golf,'tennis and jayvee
lacrosse providing the local interest.
Three 6ther Nittany teams will pursue their fortunes on
foreign fields with Coach Joe
Bedenk’s baseballers facing
their first away test at Buck
nell, the track team opening at
Columbus, Ohio, and State’s la
crossemen tilting against Rutgers
at New Brunswick, N.J. )

Duquesne’s grldders this after
noon at 2 p.m., Lehigh—tennis
(2 p.m.)i Georgetown—golf (1:30
p.m.) and Kenyon—JV lacrosse
(2 p.m.). - .
Thlnelads in Tri-Meet
' Cant. Jim Gehrdes will lead
the Nittany track team into a
battle royal with Michigan State
and Ohio State at Columbus, Ohio,
this afternoon.
It Will be the opening meet of
the season for the cindermen of
Coach Chick Werner and will be
one of the top meets of the collegi
ate track season.
Veteran sprinter Wil' Lancaster
will make the trip and partici
pate. The ace runner was injured
in practice last week and was'con
sidered a doubtful starter; His
presence at'the meet boosts Penn
State’s chances.
Nine Seeks Third Win
The Lion diamond squad will
make its first road trip of the
season as they journey to Lewis
burg to meet the Bisons of Buck
nell.
■ Coach Bedenk announced, that
Dalton Rumberger will go on the
mound in an effort to make it
two straight for the Nittanies.
Rumberger has pitched in only
one game this season—the 6-3 loss
to Rutgers.

The Nittany lacrossemen will
go after their first win of the sea
son this afternoon when they take
oh Rutgers University at New
Brunswick, N.J.
State enters the game with a
record of two losses, and no wins
while Rutgers has a three and

The Lion jayvees entertain Ken
yon College. in their opener this
afternoon on the Golf Course
practice field. . \
Tennismen Try Again
Coach Sherman Fogg will try
his luck against the weather this
afternoon as the Nittany tennis
squad plays host' to Lehigh Uni
veralty on the Beaver Field courts.

mage marks the third such con

Despite miserable golfing con
ditions, Georgetown University’s
links team ignored sporadic rain
and snow squalls to nip the Nit
tany .clubbers 5 to 2 on the Col
lege course yesterday afternoon.
Play in the second of the two
match series will be resumed
again this afternoon. Through the
loss the Lion linksmen now sport
a one and one record.
Sophomore Ted Robertson
turned in an even par-70 for low
honors. The Hoyas first five per
formers captured victories while
only Rky Artz and Robertson
were able to count for Penn State.
Nittany 'Captain Tom Smith
lost 4-3 'while teammates Jim
Yerkes t '2-1; Joe Durniak, 4r3, and
Bob Kunkle, 1 up, also' were on
the losing end. 1
