WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 1900 Penn State Grudders Oppose Duquesne Saturday Scrimmage Tilt Concludes Spring Practice Sessions With a scrimmage against Duquesne University slated for Saturday afternoon, Penn State’s 1950 gridders will con centrate on ironing out flaws in the offense that developed in the course of a loss to Bucknell over the weekend. The Lions were humbled three touchdowns to two. Although the Lions looked Earl Bruce, the man in charge of Spring drills, wasn’t espec ially disappointed over the showing the Nittanies made at Lewisburg. The squad has not worked on defense at all, Bruce points out and was especially un familiar with the spit-T employed by the Bisons. Blocking, passing and ball handling will get a thorough go ing over by Bruce and his four as sistants before the Lions take the field against the Iron Dukes Sat urday. Downfield blocking will re ceive special attention, Bruce said, in an attempt to iron out what the staff thinks was the Lions’ chief 'shortcoming. Flashes The Lions showed flashes of promise against Bucknell, but, with one exception lacked the consistency to get a sustained drive ' rolling. Only in the fifth quarter of the six-period Bucknell battle did the Lions show the ne cessary drive to push across a touchdown. Their other score came on a recovered fumble by •substitute quarterback Phil Klo cek: Tailback Tony Orsini bucked over from 1 the one to score the only legitimate Penn State TD. Orsini, a wingback last year, has been switched to 1 the deep posi tion in State’s' single wing, and has been impressive in his new role. The Nittanies rolled 46 yards for the score, Orsini and fullback Herb Kurtz gaining most of the yardage: KURTZ IMPRESSIVE Kurtz, who spelled Len Shep .hard at the bucking-back slot, won the plaudits of Bruce and his assistants for his work against the Bisons. The impressive perform ances by both Shephard and Kurtz foretells power up the middle for the Lions in the Fall. The offensive play of John Pq drasky, the number-one quarter back, drew the approval of Bruce, as did the running of Emory Mc- Court 1949 jayvee standout. Mc- Court, a diminutive speedster, was given an opportunity late in the game and showed up as.a clever, slippery, ball carrier. The defensive play of Chan Johnson, George Harvan, Tom McDermott and Mario Santangelo drew the praise of Bruce. John son looked good at the safety posi tion despite a charley horse; while Harvan was singled out for his line backing. McDermott was hard to move from his position at' left tacklq ‘ and Santaneglo played well at end. Midfield Mutterings: Vince O’- Bara, number one tailback, did not see action because of a knee injury. He is not expected to play against the Dukes... Others out of action were tackle Dick Cripps, center Ken Bunn, tackle? Ed Hoover, and wingback Owen Dougherty. Cripps is on the track squad, Dougherty on the baseball team, and Bunn and Hoover are recovering from knee operations. Orsini wears contact lenses while in action, as will Cripps when he returns to the grid sport in the Fall... End John Smidan sky suffered a strained knee liga ment early in the game.and was sidelined.. .Johnson and Harvan came up with charley horses; while Podrasky suffered a bruis ed knee... Robert Ciesielski, a 6-foot 2- inch tackle from Schenectady, N.Y,. is the biggest man oh ine Syracuse University football team. Ciesielski earned a varsity letter from the Orange last year. Although Michigan State lost 21 lettermen from its 1949, team, the Spartans' are looking forward to another successful season. Lacrosse Squad Seeks First Win of Season Coach Nick Thiel’s Nittany stickmen will be after their first victory of the season Saturday afternoon when they take on Rutgers University at New Brunswick, N.J. The State lacrossemen, having suffered setbacks at the hands of Loyola and Navy last weekend, have their work cut out for them again Saturday. Rutgers has a veteran squad which turned in.a rec- ord of five wins and five losses last season. Veteran Squad Tutored by Red Twitchell, in his first year as head coach, the Scarlet upset powerful Navy in a practice tilt early in the season. The Rutgers roster list ten seniors, an indication that the team is loaded with experienced stick men. Thiel has had his charges run ning through scoring plays and brushing up on the zone defense which will be used in the event a penalty leaves the Lions short handed on the field. MAY MAKE CHANGES The line-up hasn’t been decided as yet, but a few new faces might break into the starting array. Thiel was pleased with the showing turned in by defense - men Joe Drazenovich and Vance Scout. Either or both may start against the Scarlet. Both will see considerable action in any case, since Mervin Snyder came up with a charley-horse in the Loyola contest and might remain on the sidelines. Saturday John Hager man and Don Coselin are possible starters at the same position. START ON ATTACK The attack positions appear set with Ed Belfield, Bud Wolfram and Jim Reed in the main rol.s. At the midfield posts, probable starters will be Bob Louis, Paul Raffensperger and either Jim Ful ton or Jack AVilcox, who scored three goals against Navy. Phil Benedetti, five-foot-three inch goalie, will undoubtedly be in the nets again on the strength of his fine showing last weekend. “He looked like an All-Ameri can,” said Assistant Coach Ernie Baer. Steve Sebo, newly appointed Michigan State freshman football coach, also starred in baseball as a Spartan undergraduate. Sebo, a catcher, led his team in hitting in 1935 with a .342 mark and boasted a fipe .402 average in 19,36. Michigan State baseball ■ team members have given catcher Bill Bower the nickname “Yogi,” after Yogi Berra of the New York Yan kees, because of their mutual like of comic books while on road trips.
