THURSDAY, NOVEMBER IT, 1949 First Call Issued For Swimming Candidates Coach Bill Gutteron, who last year brought a strictly green swimming squad into the limelight with the best record achieved at the College in 12 years, has issued his first call for candidates. After vanning only 11 out of 43 meets from 1940-48, including one victory and five defeats during the J 47-48 season, the tank men bounced back to establish a record' of five wins and two losses last year, losing only to Cornell and Syracuse. The loss of last year’s captain, Bill Schildmacher, and diver, Cal Folmsbee, will definitely be felt by the Nittany swimmers, but Coach Gutteron has a larger squad of returning lettermen than in previous years. NEW MARKS Five speed records and one team mark were set last year. While scoring a- 53-22 verdict over'the Diplomats of Franklin and. Marshall, the tankmen set one individual record, tied an other, and the 400-yard relay team set. a new mark, in its event. In the same meet, Folms bee set his diving high of 103.6 points. Don Koontz was named as head manager for the current season by the executive committee on swimming last spring. His asso ciates will be Stan Reisman and A 1 Hinkle. The committee con sists of Coach Gutteron, Harold “Ike” Gilbert, George Schautz; and last year’s retiring head man ager and captain Bob Bench, and Bit Schiktanacher.
