TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1949 Nittany Harriers Eye NCAA, IC4-A Championships Cap Successfu I Season With Win Over Jaspers The Penn State cross country team closed its successful 1949 dual meet season on Saturday with a triumph over Manhattan Col lege and will now focus its attention on getting ready for the IC4-A and the NCAA meets. Coach Chick Werner’s harriers won their third, victory ..of the season Saturday by a 26 to 29 count despite the fact that Manhattan’s Bill Lucas finished first. How ever, he was followed over' the finish line by Penn Staters Don Ashenfelter, Bob Freebairn and A 1 Porto. This turned the tide in favor of the Nittany: Lions. CLOSE FINISH The race was run over the Van Cortland Park course and cover ed five miles. Lucas traveled the distance in 26 minutes and 7 sec onds. Ashenfelter’s time was 26:12 and.Freebairn’s and Porto’s were 26:19 and 26:22 respectively. In all the first 13 men finished with in one minute of the winning time. Lucas’ victory, was another fea ther in the cap of the Manhattan sophomore. He was the star of the Jasper freshman hill-and-dalers last fall and has been the Reading runner on this year’s varsity. He captured the Metropolitan Championship title last Tuesday and ranks as a contender for honors in the coming IC4-A meet ASH AGAIN This was the fourth “time in four meets that Don Ashenfelter has led the Penn State team to the wire. He won the contests against NYU and Cornell and finished third in the Michigan State meet behind the Spartans’ Warren Druetzler and Bob Mack. Both Freebaim and Porto turned in good performances, Freebaim’s represented a return, to form 1 after running far behind at Michigan State. . The loss was the'third of the season for Coach George East ment’s Manhattan team against the same number of wins. The Jaspers carried off the Metropoli tan Championships run earlier in the season with ease. Coach Chick Werner and his assistant, Norm Gordon, will now center their interest in preparing the Nittany runners for the IC4-A and the NCAA meets to be held next Monday arid the following Monday.' The IC4-A will be held m Van Cortland Park and the NCAA will take place at East Lansing, Michi gan, the home of Michigan State. Three of the Lion’s past oppon ents had much more trouble than the pre-game polls forecasted: Michigan State was dumped by an underdog Oregon State eleven, 25-20; Army just barely squeaked by Pennsylvania, 14-13; West Virginia was forced to accept a 13-13 tie with little Texas Mines. Otherwise things went pretty much according to schedule. Bos ton College battered Fordham, 20-12; Nebraska slipped by lowa State, 7-0, and Syracuse splatter ed Holy Cross, 47-13. Villanova was idle.
