PAGE EIGHT Early School Books On View In Library Teachers at the College studying the latest methods and de velopments in education now can take a glance back in time by ex amining a display of textbooks printed and used in Pennsylvania over 100 years ago. The books, culled from the Library's collection of rare Penn sylvania imprints, now are on view in the second-floor exhibit cases at the Library. They range in date from 1770 to 1849 and were printed in 11 Pennsylvania towns. Local Interest Of special local interest is a copybook used in Stover school, also known as Wolf Chapel school, which was started in 1789, two miles east of Aaronsburg. It was the first school in Haines Town ship and one of the first in Cen tre County. The copybook, which was a recent gift to the Library from Harry A. Leitzell, Sr., of State College, bears the name of James Duncan, first Aaronsburg store keeper, and his son, Thomas. The copybook contains the rudiments of reading, writing, and arithme tic, and the arithmetic examples show problems in pounds, shill ings, and pence, as well as dol lars, cents, and mills. The exhibit includes a Noah Webster "blue-back" sp el ling book printed in Philadelphia in 1830; English, Latin, and Ger man grammars; geographies; a Gurney shorthand book printed in Philadelphia in 1799; and ABC books printed in German in Read ing, Allentown, Germantown, Harrisburg, and other Pennsyl vania cities rirm - s - mN LOST LEICA CAMERA. Dairy Profs--- Continued from page one Among recent contributions to the industry, Prof. Doan reported on the concentrating and freez ing of whole milk for storage, a process being used by many manufacturers. He also has re ported on analysis of Viol and testing methods for milk and Milk products. A graduate of Penn State in 1922, Professor Doan taught dairying at the University of Maryland from 1922 to 1925 when he returned to his alma mater where he won his master's de gree in 1925. He has been 'teach ing and conducting research at Penn State since 1925. Many of Prof. Doan's former pupils are now engaged in research and other prominent positions in the dairy industry. He is a member of Theta Chi, Gamma Sigma Delta, honorary agricultural fraternity, Sigma Xi, national research fraternity, the American Dairy Science Associa tion and the International A:- sociation of Milk Sanitarians. Significant historical Pennsylvania newspapers
