The picture was taken March 12, the day that Higgins announced his resigna tion. Bedenk has guided Nittany baseball fortunes for 19 years, and formerly served as line coach for the football team for 20 years. '4B-'49 Hi-lites in Revue Oct. I—Coach Bill Jeffrey’s Lion soccermen open the fall sports season with a revenge 2-0 triumph over Army’s booters. Oct. 2—Penn State’s white-clad football warriors coast to a 35-0 win over out-classed Bucknell. Oct. 9—The Nittany Lion cross country team opens the curtain on a new season with a 19-36 (low score wins) victory over NYU. Oct. 16—Nittany footballers re main unbeaten for the 13th straight game as they smash West Virginia, 37-7. Navy stuns soccer forces with a 4-0 upset. Oct. 23—An Alumni Day crowd watches in awe as two gridiron powers, Penn State and Michigan State, hammer away to a 14-14 stalemate. Booters edge highly touted Maryland, 1-0, and harriers lose, 36-21, to Michigan State. Nov. 5—80,000 screaming fans see ■ the Nittany grid machine, spearheaded by Francis ‘ Punchy” Rogel, the human battering ram, ground Penn into the Franklin Field turf, 13-0. Nov. 15—Pi Kappa Phi ekes past Phi Epsilon Pi, 21-20, for the intramural swimming crown. Nov. 16—State places second in the IC-4A cross-country run as Michigan State wins as predicted. Nov. * St— Spirited Pitt ends the Blue and White’s two year victory skein with a surprise, 7-0, victory. Jeffrey’s soccermen drub Temple, 4-1, for the unofficial Eastern title. Dec. 2—Sam Tamburo, star terminal, picked on Collier's All- America team. Dec. 14—Bob Hicks and Neg Norton elected as co-captains for the 1949 football season. Dec. 16—Sigma Nu captures the 1M boxing title. Dec. 18—Pe'nn State’s green courtmen down previously un beaten Washington and Jefferson, 40-38, for the Lions’ first taste of triumph. Jan. B—Jim Maurey and big Homer Barr spark Coach Charlie Speidel’s wrestlers to a 19-9 win over Princeton. The four-mile relay quartet of Mitch Williams, Bob Freebairn, and Bill and Horace Ashenfelter is also vic torious. Captain Billy Bonsall takes second place in the all around class at the NAAU gym nastic -meet. May 9—Golfers capture the re gional EIGA title by defeating Army and Cornell in extra-day play. May 11—Alpha Gamma Rho beats Delta Upsilon for IM soccer championship. May 13—Nick Thiel’s stickmen hand Hobart its initial loss, 13-12. May 18—Lion nine, with Cy Miller on the mound, clips Buck nell, 7-2, for its ninth straight victory. Scoring Punch Nick ' Thiel’s 1949 Penn State lacrosse team averaged better than nine goals per game as the Lions won five and lost four. Former Schoolboy Ace Owen (Sonny). Landon, Penn State’s sophomore tennis star, is a former Williamsport schoolboy ace. Penn State played 86 baseball games over a five-year period from 1944 to 1949 without draw ing a whitewash.
