iMGIi rni'R Panthers, Lions Tangle Today, Tkac Seeks 3rd Mound Victory Pittsburgh Nine Arrives For 2-Day Diamond Stand Pittsburgh opens a two-day stand on the New Beaver Field diamond at 4 p.m. today. The Panthers, sporting a record of 8 wins and 3 losses, seek to end the six-game victory string of Coach Joe Bedenk’s Nittany Lions. Coach Bedenk has indicated that A 1 Tkac will pitch against the Panthers today, with Clarence “Buzz” Buss picked to do the catching. impressed with the hitting of the entire team in Wednesday’s 9-0 white-wash of Villanova, Coach Bedenk will likely choose the same starting infield and out field today. TOCCI Heavy-hitting Dick Wertz will be at his usual post at first base, while Little Joe Tocci will cavort at second. Tocci broke into the starting lineup for the first time since the Swathmore game April 14 and did a remarkable job both afield and at bat. Captain Hal Hackman, who has foiled opposing pitchers by steal ing home three times, completes the double play combo of Hack man-to-Tocci-to-Wertz at short stop. Bill Tegtmeyer will be at third. Hen Albright, Bill Ondick and newcomer Owen Dougherty com prise the Nittany outfield. Dough erty has replaced big Stan Lag anosky in right field because the latter has failed to deliver at the plate. For tomorrow’s clash with the boys from Skyscraper U., Bedenk will use Cy Miller on the mound. The lanky twirler from Millers burg has been touched for only 15 hits in his last 31 innings of pitching. EVENLY MATCHED Pitt’s record puts the Panthers on par with the Lions, and the two games should be nip-and tuck battles. Albright will lead off for the Nittanies, followed by Captain Hackman, the team’s top run scorer. Tocci will hit number three, with Wertz in the clean up slot. Dougherty, the lefty rightfield er, will bat fifth, with catcher Buss, Ondick and Tegtmeyer go ing to the plate in that order. Tkac will complete the list when he bats ninth. Tkac, a con verted outfielder, has hit safely five times in 12 times at bat, and owns a .417 average. He wili be seeking his third victory when he toes the slab in today’s tilt. He made his third start against Navy Saturday, but was relieved by Miller in the third ining after a big Navy ral ly. The Lions came back to tie that game up before it was called because of rain. PENNSYLVANIA Dougherty, Doherty Keeps Scorers In Dither What’s in a name? Recently, in the Lion—Villanova baseball game, it was Dougherty vs. Doherty in right field while next fall when the two team meet on the gridiron it will once again be Dougherty vs. Doherty, this time the two will operate in op posing backfields. When sports publicity director Jim Coogan was asked whether there were any football players on the Villanova diamond team, he answered, “Yes, Doherty.” But no, he plays for Penn State. After a short explanation it was learned that Bill Doherty handles the quarterbacking for the Wildcats in the fall while Owen Dougherty operates from the wingback slot in the Nittany eleven. MAY 13, I!Mft Lacrosse Team Seek To Even Win-Lossßecord For a guy whose team has just dropped four straight games, Penn State’s lacrosse coach Nick Thiel is holding up pretty well. Still hopeful of coming up from the floor in the Lions two final road games against Hobart and Colgate this afternoon and Saturday, Thiel expressed both his own and the players’ hopes of coming through with a final 5-4 record at the present time the Nittany Lions’ stick reading shows three wins against four losses. Following a bad practice week, what with bluebooks and job hunting seniors, the State squad departed early this morning by bus for Geneva, N. Y., where they tackle the Statesmen today. “I realize that I’m setting a pre cedent.” said Thiel in his office yesterday afternoon, ‘‘but I am taking only one goalie along on the trip. With John Herr QUt with a bad knee and Dick Hanna not being able to play I’m left shorthanded for varsity net tend ers. It is impossible to take any of the jayvee goalies along because they also have a game Saturday.” In a pinch Thiel could use his versatile captain, Rodger Nestor at the goal spot. Also unable to accompany the squad because of a leg injury, Murph Szadziewicz, varsity de fenseman, will be left at home. Thiel indicates that Harrie Bragg, who has been looking extremely well in late practice rounds, will probably fill the gap left by Szad ziewicz. Hobart, sporting a slate of seven straight wins, is rated just a rung below Syracuse. The Syracusens, conquorers of State by a 12-7 score last Saturday, rate the edge over Coach “Babe” Kraus’ stick men only by the margin of a better-balanced offense. Against the Lions, Hobart has been practically invincible over the years on its own battlefield. Making an outstanding attack all the more powerful is the All- American play of inside attack Gordie Satterley, 207-pound, 6- foot 2-inch Newark junior. Sat terley has paced his team mates in the scoring column for the past two years. 5 .417 LionNetmen Invade Colgate, Syracuse Sherm Fogg’s Nittany Lion ten nis team left State College late yesterday afternoon for Hamil ton, New York, where it battles Colgate’s Red Raiders today in a return match. The Lions travel to Syracuse tomorrow for an en gagement with the Orange net men. Colgate trimmed Penn State, 7- 2, here two weeks ago. However, since that time, the Foggmen have won two of three matches, defeat ing Duquesne and Lehigh while losing to Navy. The Red Raiders, paced by Frank Warren, three time captain, are enjoying one of (heir best seasons since 1942, the pinnacle of Colgate tennis under Perry Rockafellow. The Lions have dropped seven of eight decisions to Colgate in the comparatively new series. Penn State’s individual winn ers in the 45-year-old Eastern In tercollegiate Wrestling Associa tion title tournament number 5. Heavyweight Homer Barr, of Clearfield was the 1949 Lion title winner.
