WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, 1949 Lion Nine Triumphs, Blankets Villanova, 9-0 Miller Gains Fourth Win As Wertz Gets 3 Hits Righthander Cy Miller and first baseman Dick Wertz combined talents yesterday and led Penn State’s rampaging baseballers to a 9-0 whitewash over Villanova. The game, the sixth straight win for the Nittanies, was played on New Beaver Field. Miller came through with a topnotch pitching performance, The slender moundsman allowed only four hits, and not a single Villanova runner reached sec ond base. 3 HITS ’ Wertz, who was hitting .394 be fore today’s Wildcat feast, slammed out two singles and a double to lead the Nittany nine at the plate. Miller himself smacked two bingles. State took a one-run margin in the first when Joe Tocci walked apd held up at third on Wertz’s two-base clout to right center. Moroney, Wildcat pitcher, walked both Owen Dougherty and Jack Kurty to force in a run. The Lions tallied four times in both the second and third frames. Singles by Miller, Wertz, Dough erty and Kurty, walks to Hen Al- Lion Net Crew Invades Lehigh Penn State’s tennis team will be looking for its second victory in five starts at Bethlehem this af ternoon when the Lions battle Le high. After losing their first three matches to Bucknell, Colgate and Navy, the Lions trounced Du quesne, 8-1, last Saturday on the home grounds for their first win. Sherm Fogg's net crew will re turn here after the match and then travel to Syracuse and Col gate for weekend tilts. Sammy Blazer, travel coordina tor of the Central Extension Ser vices at the College, has driven more than a quarter of a million miles in the last seven years and is still without an accident. The SAE’s clubbed the enlarg ed apple for six tallies in the first inning, then came back to garner four more in the second to com mand the contest early. The Beta’s four-run rally in the fifth, however, made it a battle until the rains came. Meanwhile on the golf-course diamond, Cody Manor and the Penn State Club, independent teams, pounded the ball for a 6-6, seven Inning tie that the rain also interrupted. Kappa Delta Rho pushed across three ruris in the first and four in the third inning to defeat Al pha Epsilon Pi, 7-0, and Ted Kubicki tossed Phi Kappa to a 5-3 victory over Phi Kappa Sig ma, in the other scheduled game Monday. Tonight, Cody Manor and Penn State Club tangle at 6:30 p. m., Phi Sigma Delta will meet Delta Sigma Phi, Pi Kappa Alpha will battle Alpha Chi Sigma, and Sigma Alpha Epsilon will meet Beta Theta Pi. DU, AGR Win In IM Soccer; Finals Slated for Tonight Delta Upsilon and Alpha Gamma Rho, the 1947 finalists in intra mural soccer, will clash for the 1949 championship today at 4:30 p.m. on the golf course field. The D.U.’s will attempt to avenge their 1-0 defeat in the ’47 contest. Alpha Gamma Rho reached the finals by edging Lambda Chi Alpha, 1-0. Bill Worthington Lion JV Netmen Split Matches Penn State’s junior varsity tennis team split its first two matches of the season, edging Bucknell, 5-4 o n Monday a t Lewisburg and losing to the Al toona Center, 4-3, here yester day. The Lion seconds captured four of six singles events and one doubles affair to earn the Buck nell victory. Spence Boyer, Dave Jones, Coleman Gainsburg and Leo Witkoski won in the singles while Witkoski and Charlie Nis key took the only Lion doubles victory. Delta Upsilon’s “Rusty” Lieb scored a first-period marker, but a second-stanza goal by Phi Kap Fred Shihadeh dead locked the game. The D.U.’s had two corner kicks to one for the Phi Kap’s to gain the victory. Joe Lane, Delta Upsilon’s star player, missed his team’s semi* final game because of a leg in jury. After scoring two goals in an earlier contest against Phi Sigma Kappa, Lane was kicked in the leg and had to leave the game. The D.U.’s will have Lane’* services today if Doctor Gries* gives him permission to play. BULLETIN . . .
