Automobile accident statistics are among the worst offenders in this respect. For instance, take the figure 3190, which represents the number of persons killed in automobile accidents last De cember. It doesn’t tell anything of the anguished parents whose children’s brilliant futures were prema turely snuffed out in needless accidents while enroute home for the gayest time of the year. Nor can it reveal any of the horror of smashed and battered bodies, lying in crumpled heaps on a highway littered with broken bits of glass and shattered steel. And how about the figures that inform us that drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 were in volved in 27 per cent of all fatal accidents last year? Or that one person out of 4500 will be killed in an automobile accident this year? Again they don’t tell the whole truth, for they never tell the driver that he might be next. And he often is.
