WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1943 Lions Place Second hi IC4-A Competition Space will have to be found in the already overcrowded Rec _Hall trophy cases for still another cup. The newest addition to the Nittany Lion list of athletic laurels is the silver statuette symbolic of second place in the 40th annual running of the IC4-A cross country championship at New York's Van Cortlandt park Monday. The Lion harriers registered, a mild upset as they placed ahead of such strong contenders as Army, Syracuse and Rhode Island State to emerge just behind in vincible Michigan State for the team title. The Spartans, in capturing their first title since 1937, re placed last year's winner,' Man hattan, which finished fifth in the 27-team eld. SPARTANS Michigan State placed five of its runners in the first 18 finish ers to amass a low total of only 55 points. Penn State had 125, Army was third with 140, Rhode Island State fourth with 149, Manhattan fifth with 157, Syra cuse placed sixth with 212 points, and New York University came up with 239 points to finish in the seventh slot. In the race for the individual title spindly-leg ged Don Black of Rhode Island State lived up to advance notices and came home 200 yards in front of Horace Ashenfelter, Li on cross-country tar. It marked the second suc- cessive year that Black has beat en out Ashenfelter for the IC4-A crown. Ash set the pace for the 197- man pack for approximately the first half of the five-mile course. At that point Black took over and the slender Rhode Island junior put the pressure on relentlessly td win in a breeze. The 26-year-old ex-soldier cov ered the five-mile distance in the amazing time of 25:00:4, better ing his 1947 clocking by almost 37 seconds. Ashenfelter's time was 25:28. H. Browning Boss of Villanova, Dick Church of Syra cuse, and Warren Druetzler of Miehimon State, rounded out the first five. OTHER LIONS Other Lion harriers who com pete* in Monday's meet were John St. Clair, 20th; Don Long enecker, 35th; John Bates, 36th; John McCall, 39th; Al Porto, 52nd and Bob Parsons, 95th. Mitch Williams did not compete in Mon day's event. It was one of the finest fields in the history of the IC4-A and it took fast going to finish in the top 25. In this respect St. Clair 's performance in finishing 20th must be accounted a remarkable feat for a first-year man. Coach Chick Werner expressed pleasant surprise at the strong showing of his team, and had words of praise for each of the runners. Yesterday the Wernermen took a well-deserved rest, but work outs in preparation for the NCAA till* competition at East Lansing, Midi., Monday, will be resumed ibis afternoon. Now Penn knows how it fepls to be defeated with victory virtually in its grasp. It will soon be time for the yearly farce of picking All-Amer ican football teams, so now is a logical time to begin thinking about selections. Contrary to popular belief, there is no need to be a football expert to entex this game. Actual ly the selector doesn't have to be an expert in any field. Just in case anyone is interest ed,this is the way to go about formulating a so-called "dream team." First place before ~o u five receptacles of any sort. Just label each container with one of the following signs: end, center, tackle, guard, back. Werner Now think of all the football players you have seen, heard a bout, read of, etc. Make out a separate slip for each man, and put his name in the container marked with his position. Care fully stir the names until they are well mixed. This part of the job is important; it must be done with the utmost precaution. All that remains to be done at this point is to list the names. There is no need to choose a sec ond, third or fourth team unless you want to do so, for the first one is all that really counts. And now you have an All- American football team, a team composed of the "greatest" play ers in the colleges of the United States, a team "unconditionally guaranteed to beat any other combination of football players.
