THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11, Between • The Lions _ By Tom Morgan SPORTS EDITOR Top Billing Nittany Lion Skipper Bob Hig gins rates last Saturday's football fray in which his eleven put the skids on Penn "the top perform ance of the team over its two year undefeated period." Said the Hig at the State College Quarterbacks C 1 u b yesterday: "After two or three plays I could tell we were defi nitely 'up' and would give Penn a real struggle even if we didn't win." Although delighted with his team's showing against Penn, he declared: "You still have to be lucky to win. We've had a lot of good for tune last year and this in staying unbeaten. Someone is bound to knock us off, and it could happen this season. That's what I'm afraid of." Goal Line Play It's interesting to compare treatment of the disputed Penn "touchdown" play by two dif ferent Philip newspapers. In Tuesday's editions both the Evening Bulletin and the In quirer seem to concede that photos of the game show Back Carmen Falcone's knee touch ing the ground before he reached the goal . The difference is that the Bul letin says point-blank that "films show no Penn touchdown," while the Inquirer implies it. Coach Favors Lions' Soccer Team Over Improving Cornell Coach Bill Jeffrey's favorite ditty at the present time is, "Rain, rain go away, come back again some other day," for it seems that Ole King Pluvius likes to send h pleasure into the Nittany Valley. Rain during recent practice sessions has greatly handicapped the booting progress this week as Jeffrey is prepping his proteges for one of their stiffest' tests to date ,this Saturday's encounter with Cornell's Big Red at Ithaca, N.Y. Soccer battles are won on the Mkt and not in the record books and so Jeffrey is drilling his boot ing; experts hard every day de spite the hampering weather con ditions and the veteran mentor THE DAILY COLLEGIAN, STATE COLLEGE, PENNSYLVANIA Upsurging Owls To Try 'New' Attack on Lions Temple's revitalized football team, riding on the crest of a two game win streak, will try its attack on the undefeated Penn State gridders Saturday afternoon on New Beaver field. For five straight weeks while the Temple football team was dropping games right and left, Coach Ray Morrison was experiment ing on an effective offensive punch, and now with two victories behind him, the Owl mentor will bring his new attack to the Nit tany Valley in an attempt to up set-the Penn State squad. Backfield Coach Al Michaels, who saw the Tempiars lose to West Virginia, 27-7, and then look like an entirely different team in its last two decisive wins over Bucknell and Syracuse, warned the Lions that the Philadelphia eleven isn't as weak as its record indicates. LATERALS "Ninety percent of their offen sive play revolves around buck laterals," said Coach Michaels. "The ball is centered to the full back and he passes it off to the other backs on almost every car ry. This type of play gives Tem ple a wide-open type of attack, something like West Virginia's and a little like Penn's." The Nittany Lion coach also ex pressed concern about the mental condition of the Lions as com pared to the Owls. "You can't get a team "up" for every game, it just isn't possible. We know that Temple will really be out to win this one and we've got to play a good game to beat them." BERNARDO Outstanding back on the Tem ple team is Bill Bernardo, a 180- s rain drops with the greatest of thinks that if the Lions keep im proving every game as they haVe been since the season started, they will return home victorious this weekend. .• Playing at home last season, the Blue and White scored four times against Cornell while the Big Red was held scoreless, but the outcome of the contest this year is expected to be much closer since word from Ithaca boasts of a strong soccer team which is bolstered by freshman booting stars. Try Again Intramural fo o t ball will make one last effort to finish off touch-football finals tonight if the weather permits, said Eugene C, Bischoff, director of IM athletics, yesterday. The same program that was scheduled when rain washed out play last night will be in effect. Phi Epsilon Pi will clash with Phi Sigma Kappa at 7:30 p.m., followed by the game between the Coal Crack ers and the Hot Rocks at 8:15 p.m. If rain makes play impos sible tonight, the fin o al games will be postponed until next week. pound fast and shifty runner. Bernardo galloped 33 yards around end last week against Syracuse for a touchdown, and also 'was on the receiving end of a 25-yard touchdown pass against Rutgers Coach Michaels rates Bernardo as the successor to the star on last year's Cherry and White team, Phil Slosburg. Aerial artist on the oft-defeated team is Paul Dubenetsky, 198- pound tailback, and the punting and quick-kicking specialist is Tom Skaldany, 200-pound full back. FORMATION The Philadelphia team employs an unbalanced "T" formation, shifting into a single wing, much like the Michigan State style of attack. Against Syracuse the Owl defenders intercepted six of Ber nie Custis' passes and held "Sliv ers" Slovenski to minus yardage. When Coach Morrison began the season, he forecast that his team would be a "November" team.
