FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22. 1948 Maryland Soccer Forces Tangle with Jeffreymen Hopeful, but keeping their fingers crossed for good luck, the Lion booting forces are at top strength for tomorrow’s encounter against one of the Eastern seaboard’s most formidable soccer aggre gations, the Terps from Maryland. Tomorrow’s meeting against Maryland will mark the first time that the Lions have met the Terps on the soccer field. To allow returning alumni to witness the Maryland-Lion soccer encounter, the game has been scheduled for 10 o’clock tomor row morning. HOPES When the Lions opened against Army it was a smooth passing ac curate shooting combination that brought back the victory flag to Nittany Valley. The following week a much cooler State team squeezed by an under-estimated Bucknell elev en by a one-goal margin and then last week, a completely cold outfit failed to score a goal in 16 scoring opportunities while its opponent, Navy, tallied with four counters. Jeffrey, the Smiling Scot, is hoping for another hot day to morrow as he plans to send his veteran line, composed of Ted Lieb, Harry Little, George Phil lips, Dean Witmer and Hal Hack man, against the Terps. The forward wall, which is packed with sped and passing finesse is the backbone of the offensive-minded Lions. Lieb, a standout left flank man, found the scoring zone against Bucknell and should pro vide plenty of scoring punch as should Harry Little, his inside partner. PHILLIPS # George Phillips, who was sidelined earlier in the season because of an injury, most likely will replace Clarence Buss as the starting center forward. Two veterans, Dean Witmer, alert playing team captain, and Hal Hackman provide the neces sary scoring punch of the right side of the offensive wall. PENNSYLVANIA was one of the major reasons for the Lions’ poor showing against the Middies, Jeffrey plans to send either Jim Gibson or Ed Taggert to guard the nets.
