THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1948 Between The Li«ns By TOM MORGAN Sports FVHtor If Pays Off A keen sense of what is going on at the moment has paid divi dends many times for the Nittany Lion grid eleven. An instance of this occurred m last Saturday’s scrao with Syracuse. With the Lions crowding the Orange goal line for the last lime in the fourth quarter, Pitchin' Elwood Petcl.el look the pass from center, ran to his left for a short pass to End Sam Tamburo, but couldn't find Sam in the end zone. Meanwhile, Fullback “Punchy” Rogel, whose main job on the play was already done, scampered into the wide open spaces of the end zone and found himself on the receiving end of a “quickie” touchdown pass from Petch. Thus, the Lions chalked up their fifth TD. although Rogel was not tabbed as a possible receiver in the original play. That's the kind of thing that makes for a top team and even causes the head coach to in quire after it's all over, "How'd you boys figure that one out?" Lone Wolf Since West Virginia fell from the unbeaten ranks over the weekend, only Penn State foot ball opponent now boasting an unmarred slate to date is Penn. But. as Cautious Casy, our ad miring fraternity brother, says, “Don’t let that fool you.” Victory Song In Courtland, N. Y„ where the football team stopped for lunch Saturday, Wally Triplett Larry Joe and Rogel were guests at a man-in-ihe-street radio program. PENNSYLVANIA Kelly, Drazenovich May Miss Battle with Mountaineers Hit by “guarditis,” Penn State grid coach Bob Higgins will have to try to find replacements for one and possibly both of his first-string guards for Saturday’s tilt with West Virginia. Both Paul Kelly, 210-pound guard from Erie, and Joe Drazeno vich, 200-pound guard from Brownsville, a re sidelined with leg in juries. “Kelly, in all probability, will not play this Saturday.” com mented Dr. A. H. Griess, team physician. “We’re not certain about Drazenovich,” contin ued, ‘and we’re retaking x-rays of his bruised ankle and foot.” Should both Lion regulars have to miss the contest, Coach Hig gins will have John Simon, 195- pounder from Brownsville, and Fred Felbaum, 190-poung guard from Youngstown, to throw into the gap left by the injured players. Both men ?aw action in last week’s game with Syracuse, and Felbaum played almost the entire second half of the con test. OTHERS Other guards on the Higgins roll are Pete Chiesa, 205-pound soph from Johnsonburg; Val Troy, a 212-pounder from Mel rose, Mass.; Joe Sarabok, Lans ford, who was injured at the be ginning of the season, and Tom Smith, Rockville Centre, N.Y., guard, who saw action in both games. While news on the local front was rather dark, the national As sociated Press poll gave the the others to sing a Penn State victory song. “The only song we Know on the football team,” replied Rogel, “is ‘Jedjze Boat,’ a Slovak home coming song.” A striking rendition of “Jedjze Boat” for the edification of Court land’s poulace never materialized, however, when “Punchy’s” co horts backed out, and anyway, it was time to leave the air. Tops Center "Jiggs" Beatty, play ing one of the best games of his college career, saw more action during the Syracuse fray than any other Lion gridman. Lions a bright rating. F\;nn State moved up one notch in the AP standings and is now ninth, 44 points behind the University of Pennsylvania. Army took the top spot in the East by remaining in fifth place, while North Carolina, Notre Dame, Northwestern and Michi gan complete the top five selec tions. California, Georgia Tech, Penn, Penn State and Mississippi round out the ten top teams in the country as selected by the sports writers’ poll. TRIPLETT Running almost 15 yards per try, Wally Triplett, Lamott wing back, scampered away with, ground-gaining honors for the first two weeks of Penn State grid battles. Triplett carried the ball just 13 times in two games for a total yardage of 199 yards and a net yardage of 194. Fran Rogel, with 5.6 yards per try, leads the fullbacks i n the running department. The North Braddock pile-driver hit the Bucknell and Syracuse lines for 122 net yards in 22 tries. Both Bill Luther with 5.45 and Clarence Gorinski with 5.35 were able to get over the five-per-try mark. Luther carried the ball 11 times and Gorinski, who played only in the Syracuse game, car ried the ball three times for 16 yards.
