WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, Between The Lions TuSslf By Tom Morgan Sports Editor Joe or Guiseppe One of the countless connois seurs of Wittany football writes to ask if Larry Joe, Lion tailback flash, once cavorted under the name Lawrence Guiseppe. Well, for our two bits, you can call him either. Under either tab, he’s still a speed-merchant of the first order. Just to keep the record straight for posterity, we fired this one at Joe in the Water Tower yester day. He says the family name was once Guiseppe but he was born Larry Joe and has always carried that moniker. Incidentally, Larry—the Derry Express from Derry, Pa.—will probably see action exclusively as a spot runner—in for a play or two at the right time and back out again. He may also perform a little in the fullback slot. Scouting Report Perhaps this doesn’t belong here, but. . Lion Scout Joe Bedenk took in the Bucknell-Alfred fray last weekend and the hot report he sends along is to watch out for Annie. He declares, “She’ll be the star of the game!” Annie is Ann Frances Cassell, from Millville, New Jersey. Sec ond nationally in drum majorette competition last year, she’s now starring for the Bison band. Genial Joe Bedenk describes her thusly: “She has a beautiful coat of tan with the right shape to go under it.” Penn State was undefeated on its home gridiron from 1888 until Notre Dame turned the trick in 1913. PENNSYLVANIA Booters Sharpen Attack For Opener Against Army “Keep the ball on the carpet.” That’s this week’s motto for the Lion soccermen as Coach Bill Jeffrey has his proteges sharpening their passing attack in prepara tion for this Friday’s inaugural booting contest against Army. The veteran Scotsman puts particular stress on accurate passes. He says: “A good pass is just as vital in soccer as it is in basketball. You have to make sure that one of your own men gets the ball in- stead of the opponent.” Using his first team defense and pitting them against his first team’s offensive line, the Lion mentor has his charges going through hectic daily workouts on the golf course practice field. TWO TEAMS Two full teams will make the trek up the Hudson river to West Point as the Lion Jayvees tangle with the Army juniors prelimi nary to the varsity skirmish. Jeffrey has a strong forward wall in the making with Ted Lieb, Harry Little, George Phillips, Captain Dean Witmer and Hal Hackman being the mainstays in recent practice sessions.
