SATURDAY "SEPTEMBER 25. 1948 300 See Lion Subs Scrimmage Juniata Eleven About 300 students and faculty had a sneak preview of the re serve strength of the Penn State football team yesterday afternoon on the College practice field when the Lion reserves scrimmaged Ju niata College. Coach Bill Smaltz, a former Nittany gridder, brought two squads from Huntingdon to test his formations and defenses against the Lion reserves. Passing, kicking and running from the tailback spot, Vince O’Bara, 168 - pound sophomore from Johnstown, stole the show as the Lions scored four times while holding the visitors score less. LONG GAINS Two other sophomores, Tonv Orsini of Hummelstown and Owen Dougherty of Dunmore, reeled off long gains on straight plunges and some clever down field running. Downfield blocking on the pan of the Blue and White was out standing although no scores were made on long runs. On the defense, the forward Walls of the Penn State team were impregnable and the Juni ata squad was held to a short gain on each play. PLACE-KICKER All four extra points were booted by Carl Sturgis, Nittany place-kicking specialist. Deception was held to a mini mum during the contest since a tackle on the visiting eleven, Cecil Jackson, worked out with the Lions last fall and he an nounced the play to his team mates a few seconds before the play actually started. Two referees for the practice found it very hard to be impar tial since the line ref was Bobby Williams, ex-Lion star, and the baikfield ref was Chuck Drazeno vich, Nittany back. DeGROOT A new coach and a new line will face the Blue and White footballers the Saturday after the Syracuse game when Coach Dud DeGroot brings his West Virginia Mountaineers to the Nittany Val ley. DeGroot lost most of last, sea son’s line via graduation, but he’ll have his new forward wall in shape in time for the October 16 clash against the 21-14 winners of last season’s fray. Battles with Michigan State and Colgate will precede the game listed as the “battle of the year.” Penn State vs. Penn. Al though the two elevens didn’t clash in 1947, the Lions took the Lambert Trophy, the symbol of Eastern grid supremacy. Coach George Munger is plan ning a “new look” attack for his Penn team while Coach Higgins is sticking to the smashing single wing. When these two systems clash, the fireworks will put the Fourth of July pyrotechnic ex perts to shame.
