TVERYDAT, NAY 4, Me Eleven Meet Records Smashed As Buckeyes Top Lions, 76-46 Still licking its wounds from the 76-46 lacing handed to it by Ohio State Saturday afternoon, the' Lion track team is concentrating on field events this week for the ensuing battle with Michigan State. Jack Dianetti is the Spartans' standout in the middle distance races while' Fred Johnson, who holds the Michigan State field house record of 24 feet, 8 3 / 4 inches for the broad jump, leads the field contenders. Eleven out of fourteen meet records were wiped from the books in Saturday's battle as Lloyd Duff, decathlon performer, hiked the pole vault record 6 inches, lengthened the broad jump mark by one foot, 6 1 / 2 inches and sliced :1.1 seconds from his former 120 high hurdle mark. Duff's time in the hurdles was just two tenths of a second short of the world record. The Nittany runners did their share of record breaking with Jerry Karver pulling the meet record mark for the mile down nine and 9/10 seconds, and Dave Pincus boosting the meet and Penn State mark for the discus from 147 feet, 10 1 / 2 inches to 151 feet, 3 / 4 inches. Jim Gehrdes, after being nosed out by Duff in the high hurdles, retaliated by smashing the meet and College record in the low hurdles. Even though he ran his slow est two-mile race of the year, Horace Ashenfelter cracked the meet record of 9 minutes, 50 sec onds and lowered it almost 10 seconds. The Wernermen's one mile relay team, which has yet to win in the baton run, placed far be hind a speedy Ohio State team which won the relay in a scorch ing 3:17.9: AAU champ Mal Whitfield outstrided. Bill Shuman in the 880 yard run for another meet record, while Buckeye flash Fred Johnson copped the 100 and 220 yard dashes, but could not touch the :9.6 and :20.8-second marks set by Barney Ewell in 1940. By- winning the 880 yard run, Mal Whitfield scored his 28th consecutive victory in the half mile race. The Buckeye runner is listed as one of the top U.S. Jeffreymen Show Progress Although veteran soccer coach Bill Jeffrey is busy refereeing in tramural soccer games on the golf course practice fields, the Lion booters have displayed steady progress since spring training started four weeks ago. The booting Jeffreymen will be exceptionally strong defensively this fall, having four lettermen back to fill fullback slots. All four—Jim Klines, Frank Taucher, Dave Binns and Chuck Margolf saw considerabl e action in front of the Lions' goal last year and the "friendly Scot" de pends on them greatly this year to keep the opponents from breaking into scoring positions. Guarding the nets this year are two very promising reserves from last year's booting aggregation, Ed Watson, a lanky goaltender who shows plenty of promise, and husky Jim Doman, varsity goalie of the 1945 soccer Lions.
