PAGE TWO More Than a Key Another election, important to the vitality of student government at Penn State, will take place tonight when rep resentatives from 45 fraternities elect Interfraternity Council officers for 1948-1949. The task of electing competent officers is important not only to the fraternity men, but also to all students at Penn State. Indirectly, the welfare of all students will be affected y the choices made tonight. Perhaps if the post of IFC president called for nothing more than wearing the key of office and going around to "choral sings" patting the boys on the back, then the frater ,lity representatives would be justified in electing a man on a Ix)Pularity basis. At Penn State, however, the IFC president has a large amount of serious responsibility which calls for mature 'hinking. Not only does he control the destinies of the fra ternities, he represents them to the administration, the stu dents, the town, and other non-IFC groups. If fraternities violate any of the codes which regulate their activities, he must answer for them and take steps to correct them. If he cannot successfully do this, the fraternities lose the right to govern themselves, and the administration takes over. To maintain student government at the College, care ful consideration must be given in the choice of next year's IFC officers.
