nTM3DAY, APRIL 8, 1948 Nittany Trackmen Prepare For Penn Relay Contest Even though the official open hut of the Spring track season is two and a half weeks off. the Penn State track team is trainir.g vigorously for the Penn Relays April 23 and 24. The Relays. the traditional coming event in Eastern track circles, has a list of almost 500 schools with 3000 athletes Pre pared to participate in the two day oompelltion. "Last year we took the four mile relay." said Coach Chick Werner. "and since only one man of the four who entered is mi,s ing. we are heavily favored to re peat our win." Slated to run in ' the relay are Jerry Karver. Ho race Ashenfelter and Bill Shu man from last year's squad. plus either Mitch Williams, John Bates. Don Longenecker. or Bob Auman. "Another event, the distance medley relay. should be one of our strong points," he continued. "This winter at the Michigan State Relays our team of Karver, Ashen!elter, Shuman and Ike Evans set a field house record of 10:20.3 for the two and one-half mile run. This is the best time, to my knowledge. of any college team this year." Nittany runners will probably compete in two other distance runs, the two-mile relay, and the one-mile relay. In the sprint department. Coach Warner has Jim Robinson, Rea Carroll. Wil Lancaster. and Jim Gehrdes. These men will compete in the quarter and half mile sprint relays. Robinson and Lancaster will also compete in the invitation 100-yard dash while Gehrdes and Bob Harrison will run in the 120- yard high hurdles. HAVE YOU JOINED? Beta Theta Pi-A coasted over TKE-A 15-4 in its first game but was pushed hard to eke out a 16- 14 win in the second tilt. Theta Kappa Phi lost the first game to ZBT and then came back to win the last two, 15-12 and 15-6. Phi Sigma Kappa-A won over Delta Chi-A 15-9 and 15-10, Sig ma PI-A over Phi Ep 15-10 and 15-2, ATO over Triangle 15-7 and 15-12, DU-B over Alpha Zeta 15- 3 and 15-11, Lambda Chi-A over Accacia-A 15-1 and 15-11, and Phi Delta-B over Phi Kappa Sig- B 15-10 and 16-14. Sigma Nu Cops Wrestling Crown Bill and Paul Eggert led the Sigma Nu to its second consecu tive intramural wrestling champ ionship in Rec Hall last night be fore about 500 fans. Both Eggerts' won their bouts by falls. Bill, 165-pounder pinned Ed Hanford„ PiKA„in 5:59, while his older brother, Paul, threw KDR Paul Guiteras in 5:45, in the 175-pound duel. It was Bill Eggert's fifth straight fall win. In the most aggressive match of the evening, PiKA Bob Heckel decisioned Joe Colone, .Sigma Nu, 7-5, in the unlimited class. Heckel won the 175-pound crown last year. Other fall victors were Fred Shihadeh, Phi Kappa Sig 128- pounder, and George Thomas, 145-pound DU. Shihadeh pinned stone. EMMI Grid Scrimmages Football practice scrimmages with Duquesne University and St. Bonaventure College have been arranged for April 17 and 24, Coach Bob Higgins said yesterday. Both scrimmages are scheduled for Beaver field. The scrimmage with Army, previously slated at West Point Saturday, has been canceled because the cadets will march in an Army Day parade in New York City. An East - West infra-squad grid game is carded for Beaver field at 2 p.m. Saturday. Ted Holly, Kappa Sig, in the fast est time of the evening --4: 14, and Thomas threw "Weasel" Marshall, Sigma Nu, in 4:56. Howard Moser, Lambda Chi; Jay Jensen, Sigma Pi; and Henry Van Hallyn, Delta Chi, were the other individual winners. Moser decisioned Sigma Chi Mike Kut senkow, 6-0, at 121-pounds, while Jensen racked up a 5-0 win over George Kurtz, Lambda Chi, in the 135-pound class.
