PAGE FOUR Atom Aiding Agriculture, Nicholas Explains at Forum "In agriculture, electronics wear overalls," John E. Nicholas, professor of agricultural engi neering, explained at the Agri cultural Student Forum Wednes day evening. "We are trying," he said, "to put newly acquired knowledge of the atom to uses which will aid and net destroy humanity," By various means, such as ap plication of heat, electrical field, X-rays, electrons may be freed from matter, produce waves of sound, heat or light, or even to disintegrate. High frequency sound waves have recently been used in ex periments in the control of cer tain insects and bacteria, the electrical engineer explained, and low frequency light waves are being used in stimulating the sexual activity of poultry in the production of eggs. High fre quency light waves are used in freeing foods and food storage equipment from destructive molds and bacteria, Nicholas said. "Heat and infrared waves have been found valuable in the treat ment of certain diseases," M. Ni cholas added.
