WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1047 Between the Lions A low blow has been handed to a member of the Nittany Lion football team by a portion of his own student body. The purpose of this column is not to condemn last Saturday's conduct. The editor of this paper already did that in yesterday's paper. We wanted to find mit why it happened anct find out the facts in the case. First of all, •we turned to Ridge Riley, who's seen more Penn State football games than he cares to count. Ridge stated in this week's Alumni Football Letter, "Bobby Williams makes his presence known in other ways (than being the offensive spark)—he's steady and reliable—and his handling of the team in the early stages of the game is often responsible for its later effectiveness." Let's look at Williams' record. In the Bucknell game he carried the ball four times and picked up 28 yards for an average of 6.7 yards per try. Against Fordham, he tosseci one pass for a touchdown and chalked up 15 yards in five tries. Saturday, playing under a great strain with his mother in the stands at the same time the students were booing him, he carried four times for a net gain of four yards. This measures up to not the best record on the team but also not the worst. So why the disapproval of the fans? The common answer by the fans is, "Higgins favors Williams too much and keeps him in the game longer than he should"; or, "Wil liams and the team don't get along and they don't block for him." Football, especially winning football, is an intricate science. A science just like physics or chemistry and it can not be expected that we grandstand quarterbacks can see all that is taking place on the field or the true value of any player. Who should know' better than the coach and the captain of the team? Here's what Bob Higgins told us yesterday. "Williams is probably the best signal-caller on the team. although he is not the best runner. He goes in early to set up the offense for later plays. He finds out what plays go and what don't go. His job is responsible for the gains made in the second half by the other backs." As to that second Question. Higgins stated: "Williams has the respects and regards of the whole team. There's no hard feelings any place on the team. Williams doesn't mind his job and he's glad to see Petchel and the other backs make good." Later, we contacted co-captain Johnny Potsklnr on the subject. "Potsy" echoed Higgins' statement and stated that "the team backs up the coach's opinion wholeheartedly."
