NUS Y, :JUNE q 946 Bates, Floyd 'To hildr6ss Atomic Energy Council Dr. Thomas F. Bates, of the department of mineralogy and Eugene H. Floyd, associate secre tary of the Penn State Christian ASsociation, will speak at an op en - meeting of the State College Citizen's Council for the Control of Atomic Energy, -to be held at 8 p.m.. Tuesday in 140 Electribal Engineering. Dr. Bates will discuss "Uran ium• Depo - sits and Power Poli tics," while Floyd will speak on "I SaW Hiroshima." The local community council, which is not affiliated with any national organization, was estab lished to promote the education of the community on the prob lems of atomic energy control. The council also hopes to exert pressure for legislative action to support civilian control of atomic energy as originally stated in the Douglas-McMahon Bill without amendments. Dr. R. W. Brewster, associate professor of'political science. is chairman of the council while Dean Edward Steidle, of the School of Mineral Industries, is honorary chairman. Leland Beam, director or short courses in agriculture an nounced today. The instruction, designed primarily for the 30,000 individuals keeping bees in Penn sylvania, is scheduled for August 19 to 24, inclusive. Edwin J. Anderson, professor of apiculture in Charge of apiary research, will •be in• charge of the course. Instruction will include seasonal management of hives throughout the year, extracting and bottling of honey .mebho•ds, queen rearing, marketing methods and problem's, disease control and use of package bees. Most of the course will be conducted in the college apiaries and laboratory, Professor Anderson said•. For the final day of the course, arrangements have been made to have George Rea, of Reynolds ville, lecturer for the National Federation of Beekeepers Ass,o ciations, address those taking the short course. Rea is former exten sion apiary specialist of Pennsyl vania, New York, Tennessee and North Carolina,- and served in , Various capacities for beekeeping interests prior to his retirement a year ago.
