College's tenth president. „ Professor Edits Tune Collection Old country tunes played by the fiddlers and fifers in south western Pennsylvania will be published in a new book by Sam uel Bayard, professor of English composition. The book tentative ly, titled "Hill Country Tunes," will, be released later this spring. With a 'grant from the Ameri can Philosophical Society, Profes sor. Bayard spent a great deal of time studying the folklore of. Fay ette, Greene, Westmcfreland, .and other counties in that region of the. state. Many of the songs that he lists have been handed down by ear and date back to the set tling' of Pennsylvania.' Nearly all Of the tunes in the book can be traced' back to England, Scotland, . Ireland, or Germany. • In his introduction, the writer describes the country fiddler's technique, such as special tun ings •for harmonic ' effects. With each tune he has sketched its his tory, noted how widespread the tune is, and compiled a list of other published versions of the song. At present, Professor Bayard is working on a regional anthology of folklore for the entire country in collaboration with the men ern- , inent in this field.
