PAGE TWO Renewed NYA Program To Benefit 215 Students Approximately 275 Penn State students will benefit by the re newal of the NYA program on campus this Fall. Suspended since last Spring because no Federal funds were forthcoming, the pro gram will get under way about 2 or 3 weeks after the beginning of the semester. In the meantime, application blanks are available at the NYA Office, 308 Old Main. ' Stanley B. Maddox, the Col lege's NYA supervisor, pointed out last night that application blanks are not available to freshman and transfers until after they have been accepted by the office of the Registrar. Originally the local program took care of well over 500 stu-' dents, but when Washington cut the allocation this Summer to five million dollars to take care of "needy college and graduate stu dents in American Colleges and Universities," the Penn State ap propriation likewise took a severe drop. The lists are being compiled from questionnaires sent to local land ladies early this week. Information on the lists includes the owner's name and address, whether the room is a single or a double, and the rental price. "In no way are the rooms listed on a basis of desirability," stated representatives of the Student Housing Board, who are cooper ating with the PSCA in the project. A PSCA spokesman • advised that the freshmen use the lists as "shopping-around guides." He ad vises that the freshman look around until they find a room that suits them before making any agreements, and that 'they do it as soon after their arrival on campus as possible. "It is advisable," stated Fred E. Clever '44, SHB Chairman, "that students who plan to join a fra ternity refrain from signing long term room contracts, or enter into verbal agreements with the land ladies." "There are sufficient temporary rooming facilities," he pointed out, "to take care of those who plan to move into fraternity houses dur ing or after rushing season." There will be .a slight bit of work on the lion after it has been moved to its base, but that will all be finished before the Alumni Homecoming and the Bucknell football game on October 3 when it will be dedicated. Started near the end of May, the work will have taken, when it is finished, less than four months, about two months short of the time Mr. Warneke said would be necessary for its com pletion. He has done only the finishing work, the "roughing out"' having been done by Joseph Garatti. The gift was presented to the College by the Class of 1940 as Will be inscribed across the top of the base stone. It has not yet been decided what will be done with the model which was used throughout the carving and which sat in the Old Main second floor lobby, all last Winter. Mr. Warneke said yesterday he was pleased with the interest the students have taken in the carv ing of their shrine and especially their taking pictures of it to have after their graduation. He stated that they have had a chance to see something very few people get a chance to in seeing all the stages -and techniques of so large a carving job. • double rooms, $3, $4.
