Brown Wins
leg In Pileup
Al Scrimmage
The bad cousin of Lady Luck
.stalked the Nittany Lion football
tenni yesterday. as Sparky Brown,
fleet •tailbaak, _injured his leg in
.Practice scrimmage. An X-ray re
vealed that no bones were broken
in his leg s but today another X-ray
will be taken to determine the con
ditibh of his foot.
Brown sparkled in the practice
session, especially on
. the defense.
He was running hard and turning
in long gains for his team when he
was injured in a pile-up.
Practicing defense against Col
gate passes, the Lion eleven show
ed improvement in- their - work.
Chuck •Raysor threatens to develop
into a backer-up with a keen sense
for diagnosing plays .before they
got under way. Several alert de
fensive plays were handled by,the
165-pound center.
Bill Debler, although completing
hiS second &Ty in uniform, fought
hard at the wingback post. With
more experience the baseball cap
tain may. be a valuablereserve.
As a hint that the Nittany : team
will have to use all its craft against
opponentS, the Hig sent fullback
Bill Smaltz through a kicking drill.
Big Bill- got off several A-1 kicks,
some of them-sailing 60. and 65
yards. ;Smaltz and Schoonover al
so teamed up .to complete a 40-
yard- goal -line pass for the only
score - of the scrimmage.

Conditioning kills Taken
By Frosh Football Team
Conditioning drills took up the
short practice the freshman foot
ball squad of nearly 50 candidates
were given by. Coach Marty Mc-
Andrews yesterday.
The squad, as a whole, looks like
a tall and heavy one. Among the
most promising players, judging
'from of►ly a light passing drill on
Wednesday, will be Dave and
Harry Alston, brothers. The two
boys were standout halfbacks at
Midland last year.
The Alston-to• Alston passing
combination recorded several good
forward passes in Wednesday's
drill. Dave has the better passing
arm and his brother is a very cap
able receiver.
One of the most startling blows
befell the Lion yearlings . when
Jake'Abrams, brilliant halfback
from Jeanette who rampaged op
ponents' secondary defenses last
year, decided to transfer to Miami
to attend college.
However, Coach McAndrews still
has plenty of talent to draw from
in order to produce the :best yearl
ing squad, in the Nittany Valley
for a long ,tinie.
