One letterman, Mike Kerns, re turns at the forward wall and three others will take up back field duties. A guard last year, Kerns will be converted into a tackle. Backfield hopes for the Lions are brighter because Cap tain Len Krouse, right halfback, will again team with Bill Smaltz at fullback for a sure-fire passing combination. Pepper Petrella, temporarily out with an infected finger, may earn a starting assignment this year. He will return to practice in a feW dayS. lii informal scrimmages against Navy at Annapolis last week Petrella looked - fast and shifty. Ralph Ventresco will also as sume duties at the tailback post as a strong reserve and may share starting assignments with Petrel la. Ventresco was shifted from fullback so he could be worked into the same backfield with Smaltz. Jack Banbury, star freshman fullback last year, was lost to the team in the first practice when his shoul der was injured. However, •Bari bury is expected to return to practice in a few days. but Brown has not notified Higgins that he will be able to return. At quarterback there is a bat tle raging between the more ex perienced Paul Weaver and Aldo Cenci, a 230-pound sophomore who has loked brilliant at the post. Coach Higgins has a number of untried ends among which Bob Davis, a fast and capable pass receiVer, stands out. Wilbur Van Lenten, out for several days with a back injury, will make a strong bid for a position. He will prob. ably report for practice again late next week. Chuck Raysor, although light for the center job, has shown de termination to hold his own. However, Bob Wear at 200 pounds is still very much in the running for the position. Line Coach Joe Bedenk will have his biggest job in develop ing guards. Red Yoho and •Bob Perugini have shown up well, but Jim Bonham and John Jaf furs may get in shape quickly.
