The ELlen K. Richards Insti
tu if-; under the direction of Dr.
Pauline B. Mack, first of its kind
established in any college or uni
versity, has been inaugurated at
the College following approval of
the Board of Trustees 'at their
January meeting.
The Institute, administered
jointly through the School of Ag
multure and the School of
Chemistry and Physics, is a con
solidated working research unit
covering investigations formerly
carried on by the department of
home economics and the Agricul
tural Experiment Station.
Research data accumulated
will lead to the improvement of
.si mdards of living in food, shel
ter, and clothing. Studies in tex
tile technology, carried on in the
department of chemistry since
3919, are included in the Insti
tute work.

night, four sororities expressed
opposition, two favored the pro
posal, two had reached no deci
sion, and the other three did not
discuss the plan. Further action
will rest until Panhellenic Coun
cil meets tonight.
In downing the suggestion Al
pha Epsilon Pi, Alpha Omicron
Pi, Chi Omega, and Kappa Al
pha Theta stressed the fact that
ii came too soon after finals and
that sorority women as well as
vushees would be w T orn out and
unable to put forth their best ef
forts.
Alpha Chi Omega and Kappa
Kappa Gamma tentatively ap
proved the plan since it avoids
extensive class cutting, and re
moves from the scene those
freshmen who are not being
rushed. Zeta Tau Alpha reached
»o decision.

These have been, concentrated
on investigations on durability of
textile articles in relationship to
types of dyes, fabric construc
tion, and methods of laundering
and dry cleaning.
Human nutrition research
studies, begun at the College in
1935, will also be carried on.
These include pioneer investiga
tion of the relationship of dietary
intake to the family nutritional
status, and a similar study in
child nutrition begun co-opera
tively with the Department of
Health of the Commonwealth in
1936.
Investigations of the suitabil
ity of new materials for construc
tion of houses or parts of houses,
and of the performance of new
types of household equipment,
and a study of physical aspects of
housing are in prospect in the
Institute.

Coeds who enjoy the color and
excitement of swimming meets
should be on hand to cheer for
State mermaids in the intercol
legiate telegraphic meet set for
8 p. m. tomorrow. Names and
positions of those who will com

According to a recent report of
the major results in the eastern
region in last year’s matches,
Babs Clark placed second among
individual swimmers. She took
first place in the 100-vard crawl,
and fourth in the 40-yard breast.
Intramural volleyball tourna
ment will be conducted in the
form of a play night at White
Hall at 7:15 p. m. Thursday. All
sorority and independent teams
are requested to have eight play
ers oh the floor ready to play.
Refreshments will be served.
Winner of the AOPi-DG bowl
ing match tonight will play ZTA
for the championship tomorrow.
Thetas I downed Frazier Street
2-1 to move into the finals to op
pose Mac Hall I, while TPA de
feated Thetas 3-0 in badminton.
Ath East eked out a 23-20 tri
umph over Ath West on the
White Hall hardwood last night,
with Martha Duffman, west,
converting 13 points for high
honors. Mary Devling garnered
11 points for the east wing. Town
team and Mac Hall tied at 13-13.
