She painting has won first prize at both the fine arts ex hibition at the Rusk County Fair, Henderson, Texas, in 1939, and at the fine arts exhibition at the East Central Texas Fair in 1940 Penn State Operates Own Shortwave Station WBYA And WIMA Are Call Letters Of College 'Ham' And Army Radio Established Here In 1908 CQ CQ de WBYA WBYA This strange signal flashes nightly all over the world horn a small may building in back of the University Club It is Penn State's own radio station Back in 1908, almost 35 3 ea] s ago, a young instructor set up a small amount of equipment and an antenna on the roof of the old wooden Engineez ing F building and began to broadcast by telegraph It was this young man, later to become Lieutenant ,Colonel Slaughtei of the U S Signal Corps, who constructed one of the first radio 'stations in this country In 1910 the Pennsylvania Rail road became interested in the sta tion as a possible emergency sig nal system in case their own broke down The company pi ovided the station with sufficient funds to purchase better equipment and al so aided in the construction of a steel tower which has since been torn down The Class of 1912 do nated their entne treasury to the College to pay foi the tower WPSC finally came into being as a regulai broadcast station in 1920 Football games, Sunday morning chapel, student musical organizations, and all Commence ment exercises were among the programs broadcast to the public The power used was only about one-fiftieth of that used by pi es ent day stations but was sufficient to coves most of Central Pennsyl vania Federal Radio Communications 1 egulations became so sti ingent that homemade equipment would PENN STATE COLLEGIAN no longer suffice and lack of the necessary funds to purchase new apparatus foi ced the College to close the station and surrender its license, returning to its old func tion as an expel mental station Since that time Wirl'A, its pres ent call letters, has become in creasingly active in experimental work and is now regarded as one of the foremost-shortwave stations in the East. To all,these people, I want to ex ptess my sincere thanks.
