Sunday they battered the freshmen into suinnisison rather de cisively. For the first time, the combination of Burkett and" Siegler went hay wire, losing to frosh Fred Machmer and Ed Hebda. They were the only two varsity men to lose. Four four somes played the matches at the Cen tre-Hills Country Club. Burkett had the medal score of 76, but he scored low on the wrong holes, and' Machmer took him on the home ' green. Hebda and Machmer shot 78's, while Siegler was way off his game, taking 43 on the last nine. With Burkett, Siegler, Albere, Ben 'nett, and Stevenson back front this year's varsity, and such freshman flashes as Machmer, Hebda, and Bal ker coming up, the prospects for next year are bright. But, says Coach I Bob Rutherford, after the vanishing 'cream had eliminated the boys who were expected - for this year, "I've got my fingers crossed." Incidentally. lookirig through the records and talking with stars of the olden days, such as Fred Brand, this week-end, one discovers that Ruth erford has a mighty impressive show ing here as golf -mentor. The combinatioh :of Beyer, Menard, Marshall, ,Walsh., Masters, Hunter and Sperling iproved unbeatable, al though they :were tied once.
