C., the Lion golf team re turned Sunday with a victory over Penn and losses to strong Princeton and Georgetown outfits. The Penn victory made the trip worthwhile, and marked State's first victory in Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association competition. The score was 5 to •1. The unfavorable Princeton and Georgetown scores were •6 -to-3 and 8-to-1, respectively. ''Birnie Burkett, sophomore, provid ed State drama when he came through to win his match in each meet.. Latent Talent Evinced Coach Bob Rutherford revised the order of his line-up for the week-end, using Bennett, Stevenson, Burkett, Siegler, Coletti, and Albere in order named. Bennett and Stevenson took their best ball match :3 and 1, with Steven son defeating Morpeth, 3 and 1, and Bennett dropping to Bill King, 1 down on the 20th green. Burkett beat Peeles, 2 and 1, and Siegler bested Captain Nelson, 3 and 1, in the sec ond foursome. They won the best ball, 3 and 1. Coletti and Albere dropped their matches to Camell and Moore. Princeton a Crack Outfit Princeton was just too much for State Friday afternoon. Only Burk ett and Siegler s'vere able to master their opponents. Burkett won, 2 up, and Siegler took his man, 3 and 2. Together they won the best ball, 2 up. The others lost. Manager Luke Brightman said that after the match, the team picked Princeton to win the Intercollegiate title. Georgetown was playing a bit over their heads Saturday morning, being hot enough to average scores of 73 against the Nittanymen's 77. The score of 8-to-1 looks bad, but the com petition was really closer. This being the first year State has entered the Eastern Intercollegiate competition, a little explanation as to mend robin tournaments is necessary. There are two divisions of the con ference, Northern and Southern. State is in the Southern, as are Cor nell, Pitt, Georgetown, Penn, and Princeton. Two round robin tourneys determine the section .winners. This week-end State meets both By WOODY DIERLY • Although the Dickinson batsmen Pounded out six hits to the Lion fresh men's three, they suffered a 5-to-1 de reat" in the eight-inning game on New Beaver field Saturday afternoon. The Cubs' victory can be credited to two things—Dickinson's failure to bunch their hits, and 'two errors by Lou De Barbieri, shortstop, as well as two by Harris Heverly, second baseman. Freshman Nine Beats Dickinson The Plebes, who lost their first game to Mercersburg . Academy two weeks ago, showed great improvement in the encounter SatUrday afternoon. The, past two weeks of practice un der the direction of Coach Leo Houck, has strengthened the majority of the weak points of the team. Dean Pencil, of the school, hooked up with Bill Neal in a pitching duel that resulted in six strikeouts for the Seminary mounds man, and five for the Lion hurler. Pencil walked five men, while Neal sent three to base on balls. The Nittuny batsmen started things moving in the first round when Ken Pitt and Cornell at Ithaca, ending their schedule. The only mathematical way that State could win the section title is to bent both Pitt and Cornell, while Princeton loses at home to both Georgetown and . Penn. This is highly improbable. ' In spite of the fact that the State season will more than likely. be over this week-end, Rutherford is very well pleased with the showing of a team that has not a man who played in dual meet competition before the Cornell opener.
