Of $3OO To Landsberg Academy Makes Grant The 'American 'Academy: of Arts and Sciences has granted Dr. 'Hel mut Landsberg, meteorologist of the College, $3OO to investigate suspen sions. in the air, particularly, the larger size dust particles, Dean Ed ward Steidle of the School of Mineral Industries announced recently. The grant will permit Dr. Lands berg to obtain assistance in classify ing and cataloguing the data obtain ed in GOO to 700 recordings taken during the past year.. The immediate investigation is to determine the num ber of particles in the air in relation to visibility and the type of material :which forms the dust. In assisting to establish the dust observation • station at Penn State, the Academy is helping to found an other station for large-scale observa tions of this type. There are only four others in the world. The other stations are affiliated with the Car negie Institution at Washington, D. C.; the Mellon Institute at Pitts burgh;. the Kew Observation Station, outside London, England; and the station on Mt. Stromlo, Australia. Add reasons for discontinuing a class, only this was given by a pro fessor at Loyola A..and M.: "The class is lousy," he stated in announc ing that he would no longer teach the course.. A. has ruled that all wom en students will be granted 11 o'clock nerinission when they . arc entertain ing out-of-town guests. 1000 Enroll in Arts, Engineering Courses Nearly a thousand young men and women have enrolled in the class cen ters. sponsored this fall by the depart ments. of engineering' extension and arts and science extension of the Col lem in- fourteen towns and cities, T.' Bunnell, supervisor of clasi cen ters in the Extension Service of the College, reported today. Tentative plans are under way to set up centers in seven other localities under these departments, and the expected total enrollment for the year is 1500. Class centers are organized each year to teach subjects desil•ed by the individuals in their own communi ties. The fourteen centers organized thus far. have 'students studying 24 different subjects that range from shop arithmetic to calculus and in clude shorthand, typing, accounting, English, economics, chemistry, me chanics, electricity, thermodynamics, heat engines, radio engineering, re frigerating, and air conditioning. • Centers are located in Oil City, Sharpsville, Sharon, Brackenridge, New Kensington, Jeannette, Mones sen, Donora, South Fayette Town ship, Butler Township, Emporium, Altoona, , Clairton, and Philadelphia.
