New Stars Seen In Golf Tourney By 808 GRUBB Whatever grief Bob Rutherford may have suffered at the failure of the nucleus of his 1936 varsity golf team to return to school this semes ter has been dissipated somewhat by the encouraging performance of some promising entries in the all-college tournament. One of these is Fred Machmer golf er from Selinsgrove, who is the,med alist to date in the qualifying rounds of the tourney with a 79. Three other entries have turned in scores of 77 in the , qualifying rounds which end Saturday. Thirty-Two Will Qualify • Machmer, who won the club chaMpionship in his home town, conies here as a protege of Coach Rutherford. It is 'believed that he is one of the few golfers who can con nect with the ball without pivoting. Machmer received a hip injury sever al years ago while playing football and is unable to pivot. Despite this. handicap, he has perfected a style that bears watching.
