Constant erosion will have made it compara tively level in that period of time. Mount Nittany, born some 550 mil lion years ago, during the Permian era, is still a youngster, that is, it is still, considered a young mountain geologically speaking. Moreover, it will not be considered mature for some thousands of years from now. Members of the faculty of the Hiland Shop Launderers and Dry Cleaners. Allen St. School of Mineral Industries have made an extensive study in the geo logical history of State College and surrounding territory. Models of this land surface during the Permian pe riod, sea fossls taken from the rocks of this region when it was still a part of the ocean floor, fossils found near here believed to be over 200 million years old, and representations of all periods of geologic time are on dis play in the first floor hall of the Min eral Industries building. Great slabs of stone, which at one time formed the bottom of the sea, can be seen in many of the limestone quarries in this county. In these stones can be found fossils of small sea animals that were living at that time. State College and vicinity was a section frequented by many severe earthquakes only about 200,000,000 years ago. Evidences of what was at ono time volcanic dust, thrown out of volcanoes in this part of the country, can be seen in many rock outcrops. A rock fault due to these earthquakes can be seen in Bellefonte. Geologists have also estimated with comparative accuracy that the Bar rens had at one time been five miles higher than they are at the present time and that this ground and rock have been eroded away by' stream action and weathering. We've always pic tured them as supermen with an inordinate ability to take it, but now we're not so sure. Word has reached us via the grapevine that football will be played no longer at Mont Alto. There were several injuries last season, and:the authorities have ruled the game out as too danger ous. Naturally, we dislike to see players injured, yet we dislike even more to see the game go by the board: •While it is quite possible that very few of the foresters ever made names for themselves on the gridiron, still they turned out in their sophomore year here in great numbers and proved willing drudges against whom the first and second squads could prove their mettle. Let's hope that the action wasn't final and that the boys will con tinue to play the game. The benchihas grown uncommon ly hard for some of the tennis team and loud have been the wailings and muttering's ever since Dot An derson has played on the varsity. Their feeling has been that, while it's quite a novelty to have a girl on a men's varsity and it may pub licize the school widely, it is also quite probably that most of them on the bench could do as well or better. That's all wrong.. Miss Ander son has, to the best of our knowl edge; earned the right to play each time by defeating another contend er for' the poSition. If she has earn ed the right to No. 6 position, that is where she should play, and let the mourners moan. It might be of interest to note that Miss Ander son has won two love sets thus far, her 'only rival in this department being McGann, who has had one. It isn't just chivalry to keep from grousing in a situation of this sort, it really comes under the heading of good sportsmanship. I. M. After meeting Gettysburg Thurs day afternoon, the team embarked for Baltimore where they will meet a stronger Johns Hopkins squad this afternoon. Johns Hopkins has an er ratic record, losing to weak teams and scoring surprising upsets with teams that are generally considered stronger than they. The greatest competition will be found when the Lion tennis team clashes racquets with Navy at An napolis Saturday afternoon. Navy has lost only one match this season which was against Cornell, one of the strongest teams in the east. The Middies will have a slight advantage over the Lions inasmuch as it will be the third day of a tiring trip. How ever, Coach "Disk" Stover is optimis tic of the outcome, and it is . safe to predict that if the 'Lions win that match they will complete the season undefeated. 7 To Make Trip Seven members of the team will make the trip 11E=1 man, Jimmy Smith, Johnny McGann, Dot Anderson, and lieyison. The positions in which the players will play is not definitely determined. Coach Stover may use some new doubles combinations in the first two meets in order to determine the strongest ff• the Navy meet.
