Industrial Enrollment
Increased, Keller Says
The engineering extension depart

In Erie 227 supervisors and fore

Dr. Reinhold Niebuhr Described as 'Most
Brilliant Mind Among Student Leaders'
Interviewed by mail by members of
the P. S. C. A. committee in charge
of arrangements for Dr. Reinhold
Niebuhr's talks here this week-end,
many prominent educators and lead
ers of student thought in the east
had words of high recommendation
for the Union Theological Seminary
professor, who is scheduled to address
four meetings in Schwab auditorium
tomorrow and Sunday.
Dr. Henry 'Pitt' Van Dusen, Dean
of Students at Union, who has spoken
here often, said, "Reinhold Niebuhr is
probably the most brilliant and able
minded atnong the younger leaders of
the church in this country today. He
is an authority not only in the field
of religion, but hardly less in politics
and economics. His most important
books, 'Moral Man and Immoral So
ciety,' and 'Reflections on the End of
an Era,' have had a very wide reading
and great influence, not only in this
country but abroad."
Continuing, Dr. Van Dusen said,
"Although his is a brilliant intellect,
and his addresses are always•stimu
lating and challenging to the most
mature minds, he has kept in touch
with college students throughout his
career. He is, without question, one
of the two or three men most sought
after as a speaker to university au
diences."
Committee Choice Praised
Congratulatory words Tor the com
mittee in choosing Dr. Niebuhr to talk
to students here came from Dr.
George S. Counts, Director of the In
ternational Institute, of Columbia
University Teachers' College, in New
York City, who said, "Let me con
gratulate you on your selection of
Dr. Reinhold Niebuhr to address your
student mass meetings. You could
not have made a better selection. He
is one of the most courageous and
best informed men in the field of edu
cation, and speaks with great power
and conviction."
Prof. Paul M. Limbert, also of Co
lumbia University Teachers' College,
asked to be quoted as follows: "Rein
hold Niebuhr is one of the major
prophets of our day. I go to hear
him speak on every possible occasion.
There is probably no writer or speak-

THE PENN STATE COLLEGIAN
er on social and religious problems
who has a greater influence with real
ly thoughtful students in America to
day than Reinhold Niebuhr."
Dr. Henry Crane, who visited Penn
State last year, said, when asked his
opinion of Dr. Niebuhr's work, "Dr.
Reinhold Niebuhr is, in my opinion,
one of the most able Christian lead
ers in my generation, combining as
he does the rational clarity of an ut
terly honest and fearless thinker and
the religious passion of the truest
kind of prophet. He is our best ex
ample of the most needed combina
tion of social engineer and spiritual
pioneer. And best of all, he is a inag
nificent friend."
Others Compliment Niebuhr
In addition to these messages to the
committee in charge here, many lead
ers of thought in this country have
spoken highly of Dr. Niebuhr. Nor
man Thomas, leader of the Socialist
party in this country, said of bin' re
cently, "Dr. Niebuhr has one of' the
most stimulating minds, and one of
the purest purposes in America. We
need him and his guidance," while,
speaking of Dr. Nietiuhr's book, "Mor
al Man and Immoral Society," Sher
wood Eddy, world traveller and fa
mous speaker, who visited the cam
pus two years ago, said, "It was to
me an epoch making book in its re
lentless realism, in ruthlessly distroy
ing the sentimental delusions of the
old easy liberalism. It is the most
helpful and stimulating book I have
read in a decade."
Dr. Niebuhr, who will arrive in
State College tomorrow morning, will
address four student meetings in
Schwab auditorium, and a faculty
meeting and luncheon . in Old Main.
Convocation for the student meetings
will be held in the auditorium at 11
o'clock tomorrow morning, while the
faculty meeting will be held at the
Sandwich Shop immediately after
ward. He will continue his series
at 7:30 o'clock tomorrow night, 11
o'clock Sunday morning, and 7:30 o'-
clock Sunday night in the auditorium.
