Botanist Returns to College After
Study of Tropical Plants in Siam
After seven years spent as an in
structor in primary schools and col
leges in Bankok, Siam, Miss Hilda
S. Cunniff has returned to Penn State
to finish work on her M. A. and Ph.
D. degrees in the department of bot
any.
"It is the ambition of every botanist
to visit tropical countries and study
their flora first hand," Miss Cunniff
says. She was given this unusual op
portunity while doing graduate work
and teaching in the department of
botany here in 1926 when her step
father, Mr. Raymond B. Stephens,
vas appointed Advisor in Foreign
Affairs to the'King of Siam.
During her stay in Siam; Miss Cur-,
riff learned to speak Siamese.fluentlyi
and is at the present time preparing
a scientific volume which will be
printed in that tongue. While in Ban-.

University of Bankok and the 'Rock
efeller Medical Foundation.
One of the outstanding differences
which Miss Cunniff pointed out when
asked to contrast Siamese colleges with
Penn State,, is the time of year in
which the schools are in session. The
school. year at the University of Ban
. kok•begins early in May and extends
1 until March with two weeks of
cation during September which cor
responds to our Christmas holidays.
Final examinations are held at the
close of the Nyear in March and the
period corresponding to summer re
cess extends from that time until the
new session begins in May.
While here, Miss Cunniff has re
sinned, her position as assistant .in
the botany department under Dr. J.
B. acting head of the department.
Miss Cunniff plans to return to Siam
when her work here is finished.
