Friday, September 8,1.989 Campus Honor Societies Perform Triple Function Lion's Paiv, Senior Group, Constitutes Highest Recognition for Undergraduates Eight campus honor societies exist 'for the promotion of the Tenn State spirit, for the maintenance of the Penn State honor code, and for the preservation of the Penn State tra ditions. The highest honor which an under graduate may attain is election ., to Lion's Pair, u senior society. Lion's Bass was founded in 1907 ; and has as its purpose the furtherance of the best interests of the College. ,• Membership is limited to ,fifteen outstanding seniors. Each year many freshmen become members of jazz orchestras, since the ranks are depleted through graduation. Most 'of the orchestras were or ganized by student leaders. Among the most popular are the Campus Owls, Bottorfs, Varsity Ten, Penn Statesmen, and the Blue and Mite. the junior class. Its membership is made up of assistant sports managers, an well as men chosen from other junior activities. Blue Key was organized primarily for welcoming and entertaining rep resentatives of other colleges while they are the guests of Penn State. In addition ' ,the members of the society usher at athletic contests ; and attempt to further the good name of the Col lege .in pursuits which will be of a helpful nature. Sophomore Societies Sophomore societies include Druids, founded in 1907, and Friars, establish ed in 1912 . Their primary purpose is ' the maintenance of College customs, especially. those , pertaining to fresh men. They also endeavor to foster and promote-Rod sportsmanship at athletic contests, and promote the general welfare of the College. Archousai and Cwens are the two campus societies open to women stu dents. The former group is composed of a limited dumber of prominent sen ior women, while memb3rship in the latter is restricted to sophomores con spicuous in some activity. Football, baseball, soccer ; basket ball, lacrosse, boxing, wrestling, cross country, track, tennis, and golf are the varsity sports, while the fresh men represent the Lions in football, baseball, basketball; track, and cross country competition. • Last year Lion teams as a whole had mediocre seasons, and none gain ed an intercollegiate championship. Four team members, 'however, won championships. • Captain Johnny McAndrews and Johnny Napoleon won the intercol legiate 135 and 115-pound champion ships, respectively, at the National Intercollegiate. Boidng tournament, "King" Cole won the heavyweight title and Bob Ellstrorn :the 118-pound championship at the :Eastern Inter collegiate 'Wrestling tournament held in New York City last winter. Gridmen Begin Practice READ DOWN D'ly D'ly D'ly D'ly Lion gridmen began preparation Wednesday for a seven-game football schedule that will bring them into competition with such:teams as Co lumbia University and,; the Red and Blue of the :University „of Pennsyl vania. The first three games of the schedule wlil be played.on New Beav er field. DEAD DOWN D'ly D'ly D'ly Opening the season on October 7, when Lebanon Valley will : be met, the Lions will play Muhlenberg College and Lehigh University , on successive weeks. The Lehigh game will be the attraction 'for Dads Day, October 21. On October 28, the Lions will meet Columbia University and the follow- The 7e/xcae Drug Store ing Saturday will see them .in Syrat cuse. The last home game of the sea son will be against Johns Hopkins University ; and the season will end on November 18 in Franklin Field, Philadelphia, against the University of Pennsylvania. Following a mediocre season last year after being undefeated four sea sons out of the last six, an - even tougher schedule has been arranged for the Nittany soccer team this fall. Six games have been arranged and five will be played here. Season Opens October 14 The season opens against Temple on October 14, and for the next five Sat urdays the Lion hooters will take the field against Navy, Lafayette, Syra cuse, Alumni, and Illinois University in that order. The Navy game is the only contest scheduled. on a foreign Cross-country competition will get under way on October 21 against Le high. Freshmen gridmen are scheduled to play four games, all at home. The season will open on October 21 against Villanova freshmen and the Lion plebes will meet Gettysburg on the following Saturday.
