SUMMER SESSION
OPENS TOMORROW

instruction at the College, branch
summer schools are being opened m
Harrisburg, Altoona, and Reading
The Altoona branch, m its eightn
year, has broadened the 'scope of
work so as to include graduate
courses. Three .hundred students aro
expected to enroll in these extension
schools Already sixty registrants
in the nature study camp have begun
a three-weeks course.
Among .the new courses offered, a
demonstration class with a group of
children selected by intelligence tests
will be conducted by Miss Lillian W.
Bitncr, general supervisor of special
education in Philadelphia.
For the first time two courses in
ceramic art have been included in
the list of courses, in response to re
quests from art teachers of the'
State. Professor Harold S. Nash, di
rector of ceramic art at the Univer
sity of Cincinnati, will be in charge.
Graduate work in art has been
made possible by the addition of five
courses, while advanced study in the
Institute of Music Education includes
private instruction in voice, and
courses in elementary counterpoint?
form and analysis, and free composi
tion.
Dr. George H. Fickes, associate
professor of religious education at
Lafayette college, will conduct the
first courses to be offered during the
Summer Session in religious educa
tion.

Dean Watts Gains
Honorary' 1 , Degree
From R. I. College
bean Ralph L. Watts, of the School
of Agriculture, has been recently
awarded an honorary degree of doc
tor of science by Rhode Island State
.College in recognition of his distin
guished service to agriculture.
Graduating from Penn State in
1890, Dean Watts served for the next
nine years as horticulturist of the
Tennessee Agricultural experiment
station. In 1899 he cntcicd the field
of market gardening near Johnstown,
lecturing during the winter in Penn
sylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey
Dean Watts was appointed profes
sor of horticulture here in 1908 and
served in this capacity until 1912
when he was appointed dean and di
rector of the School of Agriculture
and Experiment station In 191 G he
was honored with the degree of doc
tor of agriculture from Syracuse
University.

three-day conference in commemora
tion of the fiftieth anmversnry of the
establishment of the oldest soil fer
tility cxpci iments in America.
A formal inspection of experimen
tal plots was a feature of the con
ference Reports on results obtained
from the fifty-year plots were given

Jeffries, and F J Holbcn, gf the Col
lege agronomy department, and Wal
ter Thomas, plant chemist of the ex
periment station staff.
Dr. Weaver To Address Farmers
Dr. F P. Weaver, head of the de
pai tment of agricultural economics,
will addicss the adult local leaders
of Keystone 4-H clubs at their con
ference here August 13 and 14 Dr.
Weaver will speak on economic trends
affecting rural joung people

cal laboratory, and W. V. Dewey, of
the engineering . experiment station,
attended the Oil and Gas Power Con
ference at Madison, Wisconsin from
Monday until Thursday. The’two en
gineers also attended an engineering
conclave at Purdue University, fiom
June 17 to 19.
14 ENGINEERS END COURSE
Fourteen engineers and plant exec
utives have recently completed the
sixteenth nnnual industrial short
course conducted by the School of En
gineering. Among this group were
engineers from West Virginia, Indi
ana, and Canada.

State graduate chemists recently re
leased, of the 722 chemists who have
graduated from the College since
1864, 303 arc now located in Penn
sylvania. The remainder ore scat
tered all over the world, including
thirty-six states, Alaska, Chile, Can
ada, Austria, and France.
New Officer Detailed Here
Captam Vinton L James, U. S A.,
has been detailed here by the War
Department for service with the R.O.
TC. Captain James is completing a
course of instruction at the Infantry
school in Fort Beming, Goorgin, but
will arrive here in time for College
opening in the fall.
