Tuesday, September 24, 1929 PHI ETA SIGMA TO INSTALL CHAPTER Freshman Honorary Fraternity Will Place 'Branch at Penn State The eleventh chapter of the Phi Eta Sigma national freshman honor ary scholastic fraternity will be in 'stalled here soon. Thomas Arkle Clark, dean of men at the University of Illinois, will accompany the instal lation committee here Zo address the new chapter. The national fraternity origionated at the University of Illinois in 1923 As a society to encourage and reward thigh scholastic standing among mem bers of the freshmen class. Recog nition of the worth of the organiza tion came quickly and since the found ing ten universities have petitioned the origional' chapter for admission. The University of Missouri was the first institution to express a desire to have a IA ars e r of Phi Eta Sigma on its campus. University of Michigan, University of Oklahoma, University of Wisconsin, Miami university, Ohio State university, De Pauw university. George Washington university and Catholic university followed soon 'Ger. When the fraternity becomes active at Penn State, freshmen attaining an average of 2.5 at the end of the first semester may poin the society. Since this is a striedy honorary so- meat necessary for admittance.,' Those who do not earn the required grades at the end of the first semeSt4r, - may still become eligible, by raiSink their marks during the second semes ter to gain an average of 2.5 for the entire first .year. Thirty of the thirty-three men eligible for the local fraternity similar to Phi Eta Sigma, which was established last year, ac cepted bids to the local and will be come ':he first members of tho nat ional society this year.
