DECEMBER 0. 1927 THE LITTLE GIRL WITH THE CURT To say that the proposed revolution in the Col lege calendar for 102.3-29 is causing a ripple of com ment user the sea of campus opinion would be put ting it mildly indeed. Those fortunate persons who have learned of the idea are quite stirred up about it Where a calm sea held sway before the proposed calendar alterations leaked out, the scenery has changed to a tempestuous body of outer with moun tainous 'saves and innumerable white caps 01 course, anything that is radical is bound to evoke opposition That was true men before Wash ington decided to embark for the voyage across the Delaware The proposed new ealenilar is nn excep tion But just as was the case with the "little girl with the curl right in the middle of her i orehead" there are many good points to the new calendar that are very, very good but there arc one of two other changes that are "horrid" It is to be hoped that the latter will be stricken out before the proposition goes before the College Senate for a final vote Monday !limning '1 he Christmas vacation slice and the granting of a respite of one week to the period between sem esters is the one proposed change that has caused the loudest squalking front the student body And that] clamoring has been Justified There are many stu dents who use the w eek or inore before Santa comes, to add to a hank roll that receives its greatest test at that period Now if they were forced ti remain in College until one or two days before Christmasl Day, they would be the losers of the twenty. thirty, tarty or mire dollars that they could be earning during the "rush" period Again, it is during the stvteef days of the Christmas vacation that the stu dent is enabled to renew friendships with the Com panions that he knew during' high school pays Chrtstrnas Period an ord4 hhe first tdal , "break" after the oheniqg of College in September, It enables the student a Tcst before the apparently-useless,but,m pot tone finals Christmas vacation is the same length of si•tcen days at practically every college in the country, and there is no reason why Penn State should alter that portion of its calendar A Nacation perod of one week between senses; teas ..ppeal, decidedly useless to all except the,Col lege Administration The one meek would enable the , first semester grades to be formulated before the sec ond registration starts, thus eliminating a lot of un necessary dropping and adding of courses But what about the stuaents. They could make a trip to their home , , at considerable expense, but many of their friends would be assay at other colleges which would then be in session. No, the student body would not welceme a vacation at this period. Everyone will agree that it is easter to pick a thing to pieces than it is to construct In fact, all humans sci.m to take especial delight at daing, that very thing, that condition will always emst as long as the world keeps revolving We appreciate the el torts that someone unbended to keep pace with the progressive policy of the College. The majority of the changes were sadly needed, especially the-post poning of the opening of College until later in,Sep tember and the abolition of the present Thanksgiving recess. The Christmas ‘acation slice and the between semester vacation will not meet with even the favor of a minority of the student body And, after all, the students should receive some consideration. A DOZEN OF ONE AND TWELYE OF TUE OTHER No one would ever be forced to take the short end of the bargain if he were 4o trade ten dirnes , to his neighbor for four quarters„providing of ,course, that neither of the participants were counterfeiters. All of which leads us closer to the point of our yarn On,the behalf of the student body a petition has been prepared, which will be presented to the College Senate on Monday morning, asking , for a - half-day increase in the date of tit,. ending of oi the Christmas vacation t the holiday to end on Tues day. January 3, 1028 at noon instead of Tuesday, Jan-, nary 3, 1928 it eight o'clock as it now stands. The, students u ant.to rem,: ten dimes In order that the petition o ill carry more possi bility of meeting with the favor of the "wry," theta is n clause stating that the student body would be willing for the ‘acatien to start on Saturday, Decem ber 17, 1927 at noon instead of Fi iday, December 16 1927 at tine o'clock as it new stands The students are willing to give the tour quarters President Vlce-Presldent E=l2l Editor :n-Chief Assistant Editor Managing Editor Associate Edam Associate Editoi The inaccesciblity of State College to the home' towns of the maiority of the student-body at Penn I State, is the main reason tor the agitation. Were vacations so scheduled as to start and end at noon,' practically a full day would be sated for the students The latter would then be enabled to make the trip back to College on the same day, rather than to be forced to travel the day before, in order to arrive in time for early morning classes The fact that Neu Year; Day will be celebrated on the second day of the month, the same day that students will be forced to return under the present schedule, is by far the most I I important reason H. P. Mllcham '29 I, Jlastaer '29 The wishes and hopes of the entire student body, or at least of the vast majority. will be behind the petition for the two-way change in the Christmas va cation schedule It is merely the receiving of ten dimes for four quarters. No one will be the recipient of the short end of that bargain I=l The Bullosopher's Chair "If one may foiecost, judging by the presentation 01 "The gamily Upstairs," hs he Penn State Player in the Amlitotann last Wednesday e‘ening, State College anth er., mat expe-t a good season in college dramatics "The play itself is one nen salted fm amateur pre dation and e, full of human, not and battle It depict.: a bit of present day, middle class lentils Ide ssith its 1 11 f...- tains, its ambitions„ti i ils and pretense, in such .t tc tied., nay that the audience is kept laughing apple matiselv thtouglicat the pnce, and sating lla,en't son seen 'em just like that."
