Iflfi.7 Collegiate Crown and Six Wins Mark Boxing Season Whatever records the 1927 boxing team may have produced it proved one thing conclusively: that to he suc cessful a Penn State ring team must either beat the Navy or, win the Inter collegiates. The 1927 team won the Intercollegiat es. An analysis of the past season shows that the Nittany Lions won six dual meets. lost one and captured the In tercollegiate boxing title placing titre:, tern as champions. Although the de feat was by Navy the Lions .gained more than revenge when they manag ,d to snatch the championship cup out of Navy's hands by a score of 22-21 at Syracuse on March twenty-sixth. Lions IVin Thirty Routs A review of the Intereollegiates a review of the boxing year. The tour ntanent this year reflected the thrills and upset that have crowded dual meets every week. Individually the Penn. State boxers won thirty fights and loet nineteen. . . Perhaps the biggest sensations of the season were Allie Wolff's record of eleven straight triumphs and Steve llamas' victory in the finals of the heavyweight championship. llamas had not fought in a dual meet all sea- Bendick's easy conquest of Cole elan.-crack Navy light-heavyweight. to give him the belt in that division, was another unlooked-for event. The ~ c ore of 5-2 seems to have been the Lion fetish this year. Five of the Penn State bouts ended in that score. Navy succeedtd in winning by that count.. several tough breaks against Mahon and Filegar proving too huge an obstacle. It was the only time that the Lions lost. A winning streak started on Febru ary twenty-sixth that culminated in the blue and White's second cham pionship. Pennsylvania was the fir,: victim, falling by a 5-2 count while Syracuse. despite a hard fight, lost 4-::. Victories over N. Y. U. and Notre Dame. both by 5-2 scores ended the dual meet season. Kolikoski, Ilendiek.and Gra zier had the knit individual records. Wolff stretched his streak to eleven in the Intercollegiates. During the year he conquered Pat Canny, giving the Notre Dame captain his only de feat in three years. Frequently dur ing the season Wolff, Crazier and Ilendiek fought above their regular weights. Crazier was successful in live out of seven bouts while Ilendick won three out of four. Kolikoski piled up six triumphs. losing a close bout to Weintraub of Navy who won the championship against' Levy. Off to a slow start,legar met with unhooked for breaks but gave n good account of himself and finished his second year undefeated in the home ring. Mahon. a4ough winning but a single bout. showed much prom ise. and wound up second in the tour. namely:. Mahoney's early season work was better titan his later exhibitions. Several times during the year Bevan, llortult, Harrington and Wilford rep resented the Blue and White. With everyone but ti racier return ing. Penn State should repeat its sue oyses next year.
