With undergraduate interest as keen as it is in many gum tcrs over the•lists at candidates for the ,arious class and Student Council positions, it may seen hardly necessary to call further attention to the impending elections Their results, hoaeyer, arc of such vital importance to the well-being of Penn State during the coming Year that too much emphasis cannot be called to bear on the manner in %%Inch the selections arc made In addition to eliminating the possibilit} of fraud, the chief argu ment in favor of the new election system was that it would get our a representame sate Just what the representative vote will mean in the final result is a trotter that can be determined be the voters dur ing the coming week If part of the student body takes its custom ary attitude tow and its responsibilities. the representative vote will he simply the lazy sole, the casually filled-in, easily influenced ballot of the group which was formerly indifferent and too lazy to attend elections Th,s kind of representative vote will prove a curse, it is not the number of votes polled alone that makes for Just elections but the thought behind each vote Despite a remarkable mass of es idence to the contrary, Penn State men may unquestionably lay claim to some degree of sound Judgment and common sense when they are given an opportunity and an incentive for cool end unhurried consideration Thb opportunity is provided by the new election system and if the best men are not chosen it will indicate either that the \ oters are indifferent or that they do not possess sound Judgement It is no light task, this careful selection of men for responsible positions To list the qualifications at a good class executive would be to list the qualifications of a perfect man, a type scarcely to be found on this or any other campus For every office to be filled next Monday and Tuesday, hcweser, there are men who have performed past duties honestly and capably and it is the duty of every voter to consider these past performances in order to secure a fair estimate of future possibilities. if the student votes fora candidate because he expects pork barrel favors in return, IF he sates for a candidate solely because he seems to be a "good fellow", if he votes for a candidate only because he hrs been told to do so by a powerful clique, if he is too lazy to collect reliable information on the merits of the candidates and puts his class in the first square that meets his cyc, then he should realize that his ballot is oat thiess, if not actually dangerous He should teat it up and tfunk A certain critic once remarked that a person is as old as he acts and judging from several occurrences at the Navy and interscholastic track meats on Saturday afternoon, there are too many students at Penn State who have not yet passed the age of si• To the outsider who is not acquainted with the childlike tactics of several Nittany undergraduates it would appear that the promiscuous "wise-cracking" which rakes place at practically every athletic event is the result of uadernourished minds It is to he regretted that college students who are supposed to Lave reahed the ace of maturity should resort to such childish meas ures for the sake of drawing a few laughs and having someone brand them as embryo humorists This practice was altogether too evident on Saturday afternoon, for following every statement through the announcer's megaphcne, one was almost certain to expect a supposed .pbe that insariably brought embarassment to the spectators, contest- ants and all others concerned When grade-school children are guilty of such a practice, it can he e•cused, but it is certainly ine , cusable for college men and espec ially Penn State men. Over the past week-end, hundreds of visitors appeared in the Nittany Valley and It is certainly hoped that their impressions of Pc.nn State were not gathered from the actions of a few who profess to be college students but oho are, in reality, over grown children If these undergraduates must persist in their "wise-cracking." they should beecmc contributors to the Lion's Den and not display then talents in a public place like New Beaver Field. SEEING EUROPE With summer vacation less than one month away, thousands of American urdergraduates will take advantage of the attractive offers at several steamship companies ior student tours to Europe with the it.sult that 1925 will probably witness the greatest influx of college tourists to the old continent in many years In addition to broaden ing one's siewpoint, it is generally admitted that the trip across the Atlantic will do much to bring about r better understanding between the undergraduates of ‘arious nations. For the benefit of those who have never made the journey before, the editors of the New Student offer some c\cellent advice which is as follows I It is advisable to forget that one is American 'Who ever goes with the thought of comparing Europe with America item for item will return more densely ignorant than he went, for he will carry a false wisdom 2 He will be polite, but not apologetic While he is trying to keep his "Americanism" in the background, he will nnertheless remain himself. 3.
