The success attending the raising of the fund will depend much on the help soluntecred by the undergraduates It is urgently re quested by those ‘,ho have organized the canvass that all students who have a few spate moments gise them to this cause The memorial to be erected in the e Library will keep the "ever welcoming smile" of Dr Sparks upon the Penn State campus To those who knew him best and to those who will come to know what manner of man he was, this tribute will arm remind them of the salutation winch =TIC "from a warm heart and was emphasized by a firm hand clasp " "Good Morning, My Friend " Edwin Erle Sparks was that kind of man It is fitting that we keep his memory alive by giving PENN STATE! Scmc unthinking members of the Penn State student body still refer to their Alma illamr as "State" No name could be less euphon ious or more devoid of meaning uhen applied to this institution Its use is as offensive to the car as the contraction "frat" tor fraternity, an abbreviation that has long been taboo 01 collegiate circles In addition to the undignified sound of the term, "State" makes no distinction bets een this College and the numerous other State institutions that are scattered inrcughout the country Penn State, on the other hand, refers to the Penns)lvania State Ccllegc and to this institution alone It is definite in its meaning and leaves no chance for misinterpretation The advocated change is neither drastic nor impossible Such evisions are not new or e‘pernnental, but hate already been adopted et other colleges and universities The University of Pennsylvania recently uent on record rs being officmlll opposed to the use of the nickname "Peru" If "Penn" is deemed an undignified abbreviation for that institution. how much mole so is the contraction "State" inappropriate for the Pennsylvania State Students who employ the tet in in their speech on the campus will unconsciously let it slip from their tongues while to the presence of outsiders during sacation periods It may be uttered with no thought of its offensive sound, on the contrary it may be used with the highest reverence, but it is confusing and misleading to those Who arc not thoroughly familiar with the College. When referring to this institution always speak of it as Penn State, it still do much to distinguish and to bring into greater prom inence the Pennsylvania State College, which is the only institution of its kind in this Commonwealth. AN ACKNOWLEDGMENT The congratilator3 remarks made to the Music department last Tuesday in these columns were ahole•henrted and deserving, but that our words at commendation should have caused sonic dtssention to conic Irma a iew organirations and individuals on the campus is i cgrettable A Just claim has been made for the achievements of the Penn State Band, which is in charge of Bandmaster W 0 Thompson, to be credited to the Department of Military Scicnce and Tactics We are glad, therefore, to clear up the ambiguity of our former statement and to acknowledge the achievements of this department We further , , wish to congratulate Bandmaster Thompson for his un tiring efforts with the Penn State Orchestra and to encourage those who are giving this entertainment to the student body COSMO CLUB APPOINTS RESOLUTION COMMITTEE 1=! pobtan Club at IN I Ist mu dm, .ill pointed .l. ennuffitteo to di i st , it p I rmtor-in-Cher qslgt nt Editor !!!!ll=liillllll R A Sinner . 2.1 A K Smith .G 111R4 3t rule} '2G Ads et 1141.: \I t fl , :`,er _ I it. 111 L 0011 'Man 1001 =MEM E/Ml=i3 Al I.
