FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1925
WELCOME FRESHMEN
Beginning with the due formelity of registering, some fifty new
men and m omen will pass through the portals of Penn State today
to become active undergraduates at this institution as the mid-year
class of 1928 On behalf of the student body the COLLEGIAN MA
Oent welcome
Soon, yet not too soon, may they learn what Penn State is, may
they learn that it is not only an institution of higher education, but
that it is also a place which then may call home
May these new students be quick to catch the gleam of the lamp
cf knowledge which is burning on this campus They are to Penn
State what oil is to the flame—they are its life They are the wick
that keeps the floss of oil es er constant—they are the light'
Po.t in their Guest for knowledge man they never forget that
there arc other things besides an education ,to be attained in four
)eats at college There are friendships to be made that will last for
ever There is character to he built that will, in atter life, be as valu
able as knowledge
These new men and women must strive for the three-fold educa
tion of Spirit, Mind and Body Unless they attain all three in the
I attest measure of their ability, these new students will have failed
to terry out their resolve when they signed their names on the dot
ted line in the registrar's office this morning
The COLLEGIAN is here to help you new men and women. You
arc invited to come to the dike for information regarding the Col
lege or the town. We bid you welcome
LAZINESS AND AN OPPORTUNITY
A large percentage of the students who periodically get below in
schohrship freely admit that laziness is the chief cause of their un
fortunate condition The yellow slips which are sent out after the
c' animation period arc complete sermons in themselves
Laziness not only has its effect on scholarship but on c‘tra
curl mut= activities as well Lack of ambition, coupled with a de
sire to get the most work done with the least possible effort, is the
cause of so many failures to make good in campus enterprises It
ss,is just this past fall that two of the tour junior cheerleaders failed
to t eturn to college When a call for junior candidates was issued,
one man responded What a dire lack of ambition ,
Most of the campus honcrs are captured by a few hard workers
while the rest of the student body sits back and cheers the other
'ellows on And then somebody cries the blues because he never had a
chance, did lie ever try' Participation in campus activities is' one
of the best adjuncts to a college career If you don't believe it, en
ter the competition and find out.
Within a comparatively short time there will be a call issued for
freshman candidates for the business staff of the COLLEGIAN
Here is ample opportunity to get into a campus activity that is truly
valuable The course of instruction and the practical work on the news
paper, together with the outside influences that are constantly met
by the members of the business staff, make the position worth while
This opportunity comes but once in the life of every freshman;
when the time comes, grab it—and hang on,

The ground hog saw no silhouette
W hen he came out from cover;
And foolishly, bright, balmy days.
We thought would round us hover
This thought offended Ole Jack Frost.
The guy with the chilly breath;
So he got in a huff and blew us a puff.
And froze us half to death.
