President Thomas, in commenting upon the action of the Col lege Senate in regard to its reaffirmation of the Senior Week pro gram, has appealed for student support and asks "all friends of the college to get back of whatever program may be finally adopted, and to defer any further discussion of the points which have been at issue, until the College has tried out the new idea " The Senior Week program which the undergraduate body attemp ted to hale abolished is the new idea According to President Thom as, "Plans will proceed rapidly For the formation of a Commence ment program of the new sort" Just what will be embodied in any new proposals to take the place of the suggested Commencement Pro gram. which has been del l eated by Senate action, is hard to prophesy. The President is right when he says that "traternity leaders have been quite active in trying to harmonize a house party program with the proposed Commencement program, keeping in mind the best in terests of the College" Penn State men always have had the best interests of their Alma Mater in mind while attempting to solve this problem. For their interest he says, they are to be congratulated, "and the fact that the College Senate has decided against them on an issue which has two well-supported sides, should not anger them unduly or dampen their loyalty" Any argument which is well-supported and which has been de lcated cannot readily be forgotten There has been no act of disloyalty to Penn State by the e \ ceptionS taken to the Senior Week program by the undergraduates The student body has attempted to solve its own problem by employing an inherent quality of originality which ever has been characteristic of this, a democratic institution The COLLEGIAN has tried to present undergraduate sentiment on the problem, but an undercurrent of disapproval is running throughcut the ranks of the student body which does not indicate that the support which has been asked will be forthcoming, or that if it is, it will not be with a truly Penn State spirit This feeling should either be quieted or brought openly and plainly to the from so that dll differences may be adjusted The best advice that can be given at this critical moment ts• don't he rash. think' HELP WANTED-MALE AND FEMALE About two months ago the COLLEGIAN issued its first call for freshman reporters and at that time forty-six men and women signed up,for the six-weeks course in elementary journalism which was ar ranged and conducted for their benefit. With the completion of the course it was found that twenty-two had survived the preliminary work Yet not one of the missing twenty-four newspaper aspirants was discharged, Here is evidence which substantiates the statement that a large percentage of college failures result from laziness and carlessness .Much hard work is required by this newspaper of its reporters. For those candidates who automatically quit their jobs because of laziness, we hare no place Another opportunity is offered the freshmen to join the reportor ial ranks of the COLLEGIAN To relate the benefits that can be de rived from four years of Journalism would require a book to itself For those men and women who are anxious to enter some line of act 'Nay that will be both instructive and interesting, there is no better field than that offered by the COLLEGIAN If you, freshman, are willing to work and it you desire a field that will develop your facilities to the best advantage, report at the office tonight at seven o'clock THE WAY OF A SMILE Penn State's "Hello" is heralded from coast to coast It is a distinctive characteristic of this institution as well as a highly-com mendable custom Years back, a proper-thinking student govern ment inaugurated the plan of students greeting each other with "Hello" And the passing years have seen the firm establishment of this practice. However, Penn State's salutation is not perfect and a little Formula is suggested for its improvement The Formula is short and is simply this• "Accompany each 'Hello' with a smile" The student who, upon meeting one of his classmates, looks up with a frown. mutters an unrecognizable "Hello" and passes on, prob ably thinks he has done the other Fellow a favor by his salutation. But it is ,the fellow who walks briskly, his face wreathed in a hearty smile, that gives one a feeling that the salutation was a hearty and personal greeting And so that man passes, but he is not easily forgotten for as .you pass the next student, a big smile will unconsciously creep over, your face and a real Penn State "Hello" will be forthcoming It's contagious A smile requires no effort Just an upward turn of the corners of the mcuth and that's all there is to it But it is surprising how much better it makes one feel, and how many additional friends, one puts by it. To quote a well-known song writer. "A smile will, go, a long, long way " EEEMII I=l • 1 . 111 1110 1:1111, IN It It polgnnnt mennot liar /111 , t Ing boil, to .101 row oho h !nen ti Mind the old hoal throe in loin .11,1 nit a , iilittooi In the le tl -1011100 of tin no t that the, 111th Loneit tot to tett. tititaten ret Ow. not tls i.11.:111t011 11111, 111 1/10 11.1%.1 triton Print Si rte .W Pint St ite Intl nhi it 7.11111 St Ito no n nolo tl It cap One guiding. the di ,tlnt thelt Alin I.
