Member of Eastern Intercollegiate Nen sparer Association News Editor this issue _ TUESDAY, FEBRUARY lq, MI WHERE THE STUDENT MAY CAIN Shakespeare is credited with the admonition, "Wisdom to gold prefer". Throughout the ages philosophers have put forth the idea that to acquire knowledge is the meat profitable end toward which man can strive With faith in the philosophy of the sages, and con- 1 ceding the value of all learning in general, a concrete problem is to be faced concerning the education ef the pr,sent generation, and more specifically that of the college student of today The COL LEGIAN has discussed this matter before but feels that attention cannot be brought to bear too pointedly upon the subject Dr Straiten D. Brooks, President of the University of Missouri, recently made it clear that the materialistic dividends accruing from a university education are secondary to the loftier, idealistic benefits to the community He said, "To establish :deals of cenduc7t, to create an appreciation of community responsibility, to develop the power and the desire to think wisely about the complex problems of state and nation, and to cultivate the ability to express ideas effec tively for the forwarding of his own business and the improvement of community conditions—all these elements arc no less the business of the university thlin is. the perfecting of u man in the nets of his business or profession". Each year thousands of young men arc tumbling cut of the edu cational machines called colleges and universities, into the world, in the large majority cf cases mere cogs who can function only where they are placed. They have received diplomas and are literally 'educated: But what else can they do; what else do they know be sides what` they have handed out to them frorii the test bdokiT Re cently a professor at this institution bemoaned the fact that students are being crammed with too much of the applied sciences rather than developing the basic sciences But that is a matter for 'curriculum study However, regardless of what is the struchire of student cm ricula, the opportunity is at hand for a valuable and necessary addi tion to tinuergraduate education in the form of better daily news pipers and other records of current events When college students can not name the governor of then state or speak intelligently upon everyday governmental affairs cf state and nation as they can upon the latest novel or the merits of certain actresses and actors; when college professors do not know the difference between the Bok Peace Plan and the Mellon To\ Plan as they know the differences between their courses; when such conditions exist among supposedly informed citizens of this great commonwealth. typical of all the states in the Nation, is it any wonder that governmental functions go wrong some times and governmental official, pull the wool sect the eyes of the meekly ousting "No time, too much work" cries the student when the rich fruits of the daily press are offered to him But if he would consider the time spent in 'bull' sessions, playing cards, too frequent trips to the movies, reading trashy novels and literature, loafing and the other forms of friendly relationship with rather tone, fifteen minutes a dny could easily be found to spend digesting the facts and comments of the press, one of the most beneficial institutions ever created for the use of mankind THE FIRST RUMBLE The open stand by members of the Y. Al C A. cabinet against "cribbing, theft, boozing, lying, swearing, careless borrowing and odic; unchristian actions", is noteworthy in that it is the first audible warning that Penn State students arc becoming weary of being made the "goat". 'lbis is especially true where thel t, cribbing and boozing are concerned. History shows that crooks of high and low degree have always been able to thrive on the vicarious efforts of their fellowmen, until the burden of their suport became too great. The people of France broke down under the strain, overthrew their oppressors, and so arranged their circumstances that they themselves night reap the benefit of their own industr'y The British have on several famous occasions forced their sovereigns to acknowledge the light of a man to profit from the results of his own toil 'I he laboring classes all over the world tired of oppression and finally organized in order to secure their rights. The law that operates un the larger affairs of life will prove ef• fective even on a college campus The rumblings of a "revolution" have already been heard. Penn State students will eventually fight for their rights. They will refuse to live under conditions which make it impossible to leave coats, books and other articles unwatched. They will exterminate the cribbing that Makes it possible for the cheat to lessen the value of the diploma for which honest students have worked hard. They will demand relief trout the disgusting sight of drunkards at social functions, merely because a favored few must indulge their passion for strong drink and their desire to defy the law. The first warning has been sounded; an organized movement for honesty and decency and - safety of property will some day make its appearance here at Penn State. The law has operated at other col leges. It will work here when the limit of endurance has been reached. .... .... Editor -In-Chia ... Managing Editor . .Managing Minot I::;E=M3 11111=3 ➢llse E. R. Professional jugglers could handle the old style shaving cream caps and never once drop one down the drain or under the bath tub. But for most of us, this new Williams Hinge- Cap puts an end to an ancient nuisance. Williams Shaving Cream is just as much pleasanter to use as is the Hinge-Cap. It softens the beard With uncanny speed. The thicker lather holds the moisture in against the skin where it is needed. This father lu bricates the skin, too, so that painful razor friction is eliminated. And when your shave is done, that famous ingredient in Williams which helps the skin, leaves your face cool, soothed and refreshed. No coloring matter is used in Williams—it is a pure, natural white shaving cream. illiams 'Shaving Cream linen) nod "Woonrlnn . fermi f)•t'.leu nc art!
