Satutd* Member of lutereolleglate INemmlaper AmoLlialou News Editor This Issue Fr day, February 3, 1922 KEEPING OUR REPUTATION For many years Penn State has striven not in Nam to be the home of clean sports. She has labored throughout her long history to be known as the place where fair play prevails, and today Penn State is regarded among other—colleges of the country as the place where the tennis play square, where the spectators, are gentlemen, and where the officials are men of honor. This priceless reputation has required years to upbuild and is one of the most precious heritages which we can pass down to the coming generation of Penn State men and women A reputation such as this can be maintained only by constantd vigilance and e•treme care on the part of every man. Each must do his part Each man has the honor of the college in his hands and a single misdemeanor by one man will affect the honor or all Penn State must preserve the splendid reputation which she has at all costs Anything else would be a blow to the college and indeed a sorry ap preciation of the tireless devotion of our predecessors who won tha reputation of which we are so proud and which we need to guard so closely. Certain incidents have occurred recently at indoor meets which would seem to necessitate a tightening up in our conduct if our repu tation is not to be endangered. At tote basketball game last Saturday evening, one or two students forgetting their responsibility touptiola the dignity of Penn State deemed certain incidents to be humorous which were not at all of that nature. Ot course only one or two men at toe most out at the large attendance were guilty of the misconduct but nevertheless it was countenanced, and visitors mignt very welt take tins conduct to be representative of the entire assemblange. ba.ely man play the game. the indoor season is Just at its incep tion and it is the duty and privilege of each student to keep unstainea tne escutcheon of our Alma Mater If a misdemeanor is detected, strike a blow for l'enn State and help preserve our reputation. IRRESPONSIBILITY VS. WORK! Reports tram the registrar's othce indicates that a veritable del uge of below grades has descended upon the Penn State student body curing the past week, more than have been sent out at the end of any previous semester. 1 his was foretold to some extent by the number of below grades that were received during mid-semester but even tne most pessimistic never anticipated the present status of the average student Various causes have been blamed A long football season, including many contests that were in reach of many of the student body, both financially and physically, a broken semester, interrupted by holiaays and vacations, a spirit of carelessness and irresponsi bility,—all these have received credit for the oversupply of below grades Rut what is the matter with the Penn State student' What is the remedy for poor scholarship' I he meeting of the honorary societies last Monday was a step in the right direction but it will be of no avail it the proposal is allowed to become dormant or if the student body refuses to take any interest in the movement The fact that scholarship is one 01l the essential foundations of success, that Penn State must improve in this re spect if it is to attain the rank in a respected university, and that improved scnolarship standing in this institution will be the forerunner of a better Pchn State, are important enough in themselves to make an overpowering appeal to each student. 100 often a student loses sight of the tact that he is attending college so that he may more successt ally cope with the exigencies of life and that he may be in a position to help make this old world of ours a better place in which to live He owes a debt to his college, to his parents, to mankind. i he individual who slights his studies in an effort to attend the great est number of social functions or to take advantage of all the enter tainments and amusements offered to the public is a loser to no mean degree. His loss is incalculable and cannot be retrieved. Oppor tunity is knocking at the door of each student's life and it is, indeed, a pity for entrance to be refused. The remedy is simple. Hard work and sincere endeavor is a pre sumption that never fails in such a condition With the beginning of tbe second semester at hand, the logical time is presented for righting these conditions Let every man apply himself through the coming semester, devote a little more time to studies, and give up everything loge work.
