Ia the College World. The University of lowa will con struct a club house costing over $lO,OOO as a memorial to James J. Trickey, a former football star who represented that institution on the girdiron. Freshmen were victorious in the poster scrap at Swarthmore but were defeated in the keg rush and wrestling bouts. Two new schools have been add ed this year to the extension depart ment of the University of Pennsyl vania. They are evenirg schools of Finance and Commerce, and are located at Harrisburg, and Read ing. Also, the educational courses will be conducted as a separate school to be known as the “School of Education of the University of Pennsylvania”. At Wesleyan the freshmen de feated the sophomors in the an nual flag rush. The $lOO,OOO gymnasium at Washington and Lee University will be finished about March Ist. This building will be called Dore mus Memorial gymnasium. The Syracuse University fresh man eleven has the reputation of being one of the best in the coun try. The squad is composed en tirely of six-footers, averaging 185 pounds. Western Reserve University and Oberlin are endeavoring to schedule a debate in which judges will be abolished. The official publication of Ohio State university, the Ohio State Lantern,will be published daily in stead of weekly. The color rush and pole fight be tween the freshmen and sopho mores of Washington and Jefferson college is no more. In place of these scraps, a push ball contest will be instituted between these two classes provided the arrangement" now under way are carried through. Vice president Marshall will ad dress the students of West Virginia university on November 21st. Haverford college is looking eagerly forward to one of the most important academic events ever ex perienced. In December, the American Archeological associa tion will meet there. The con ference, which was held at Harvard last year, has chosen Haverford foi this year’s meeting in preference to the university of Chicago. A fine write-up recently appear ed in the Ursinus weekly on the Ursinus-State game. Among other things said was this "Our boys have only praise for the excellent treatment they received as guests of Penn State”. Meeting the Returning Team It was a large and most jubilant crowd that awaited the coming of the team at the track house last Sunday evening, and had the day been other than Sunday, it is hard to tell how far the demonstration would have gone. Practically every man in college was there. Repeated calls came for Hollen back, Harlow, Tobin, Lamb, and when Captain Tobin brought out the ball played in the Saturday game an irrepressible cheer broke loose. A bon-fire was announced for Monday evening. As a matter of course, there was the college yell 3or the team followed by Alma Mate-. Much is said about the college spirit that exists at Penn State. Is it showing true college spirit when men persist in smoking at the foot ball games when there are girls in the audience? And Penn State girls at that. Sophomore Scholarships The sophomore scholarships were presented at the last Wednes oay morning mass meeting by Dean Holmes. The John W. White scholarship fell to H. F. The staff had made arrangements for a large cut of the football game at Cambridge but unfortunately it did not arrive up to the time the paper went to A Correction The baking contest, a special feature of the Agricultural fair, will be given by the girls of the rural schools, under the supervision of the home economics department. Capt. Tobin and Sauerhoff, pres ident of the sophomore class, were injured at the bonfire last Monday night on the campus and taken to the Bellefonte hospital. Both were burned about the face but the doc tors believe no scars will result. Captain Tobin will be out of the hospital in five or six days and may be able to get into the Lehigh game. The effect of the war on foreign universities is shown in the case of Oxford University, which will open with an undergraduate body of only one thousand. Those absent on military service, however, will suf fer no loss of academic standing, the time spent in war counting as time in residence at Oxford. The freshman eleven proved unexpectedly strong in their second game last Saturday when they de feated the , strong Kiski team on New Beaver by the score of 7 to 3.
