Y. M. C. A. News. We are to be favored with the presence of “Bob" Gailey, General Secretary of the Association, in Peking during the last three days of this week. “Bob” is undoubtedly a man who has something to say and we trust that everyone will take advantage of the oppor tunity to hear him in the Old Chapel at 7:30 next Thursday even ing. It might be interesting to know that Mr. Gailey is a Pennsylvanian. He graduated from Princeton Col lege and Seminary, finishing in ’9B, and in both college and seminary he was a leader in scholarship, in athletics and in Christian work. Three times he was chosen all- American centre. Few men in American football have surpassed him. In 1898. he went to China and for seven years was General Secretary in Tientsin. He went through the Boxer siege of 1900, and led in the rescue work during the Revolution of 1912. For the past eight years, he has been Gen eral Secretary in Peking. He en joys the personal confidence of Yuan Shi Kai as of most of the national leaders of China. With his wealth of experience and ob servation, he makes an extremely interesting speaker and his inside knowledge of China and conditions there qualify him to speak au thoritatively. He will make but one address while here. The greater part of his time will be given to private inter views and visits to “frats”. All out, fellows, Thursday evening 1 There will be a Bible Study meeting at the Y. M. C. A, meet ing next Sunday evening led by “Bob” Reed and “Walt" Whet stone. The Civic Club. The Civic club held its first meeting for this year in Room 232 Engineering Building last Thursday evening. After preliminary busi ness had been dispensed with the elections for the offices of vice president and secretary-treasurer, both of which are filled by juniors, were held. The officers of the club for the coming year are: presi dent, S. P. Jones; vice president, J. P. Rugh; secretary-treasurer, R. M. Decker. The Executive Commit tee consists of the officers and two members appointed by the presi dent, Messrs. Dimmit and Skillman. Three members of the faculty who comprise the Advisory Committee will be chosen later. The president was instructed to appoint a com mittee to bring the recommen dation made by the club at the end of last year regarding the conduct ing of all-college elections to the Student Board and Student Council The program for this term was dis ctissed at some length and vaiious imptovements were suggested. Fot the benefit of those who are unfamiliar with the character and purpose of the club, it might be well to state it is a student organi zation, the aim of which is to create a more general interest in problems of good government and good citiz enship. The membership is made up of 60 upperclassmen, 30 seniors and 30 juniors. Applications for mem bership are made through active members, the signatures of three being required on the written pro posal. The non-payment of dues or failure to attend the meetings of the organization leave vacancies in the roll which are filled by men who have already made application for membership. There are at present vacancies in both classes. The program for this coming year promises to be a good one both in interest and helpfulness and it is hoped that all who are in terested in this particular work will take advantage of the opportunities afforded them to get and keep in touch with it.
