Oldest Member of Faculty Passed Away in His Home. It is with the keenest regret that we are obliged to announce to our readers the demise of Dr. William A. Buckhout, one of the oldest and most esteemed men of the Penn State faculty. Dr. Buckhout had not been feeling well since Thanksgiving Day, but his fapily did not think that his indis position was especially serious. On Tuesday morning Dr. Buckhout was seized with an attack of heart fail ure which resulted in his death. Professor Buckhout was bom at Oswego, N. Y„ on December 26, 1846. He prepared at the high school there, and then entered Penn State. He was graduated from this institution in 1868. He was nominated as an instructor of Natural Science in 1871. Dr. Buck hout was a member of the State Forestry Commission in 1888, and he was also a Fellow in the Amer ican Association for the Advance ment of Science. Dr. Buckhout received his B. S. degree in 1872, and his Dr. Sc. at Penn State in 1904. Professor Buckhout has been active as a faculty member in this college for a period of 46 years. During this time he has been con nected with various departments of this college, and everything that he undertook proved a success under his most wise guidance. There was probably no man in this institu tion who was more beloved and more esteemed than Dr. Buckhout. Not alone was he thought so much of for his learning and his keen in terest in the college, but his mild gentle disposition, and his extreme modesty won him the hearts of all that came in contact with him. This paper speaking for the col lege extends to the family of the deceased, its most heartfelt condo lences. The death of this most valuable friend of the college will be a shock to all alumni, faculty and the students. He has been a long and faithful worker along lines of research and along lines of developing manhood, and with the poet Norton we may say : Weep not for him that dieth, For he hath ceased from tears, And a voice to his replieth, Which he hath not heard for years.
