Of these, there are in the neighbor hood of 200 of which he gives the figures for the twelve largest. Of these twelve, The Pennsylvania' -State College ' Stands eighth, with Cornell , University, University of Michigan, University of Illinois, Purdue University, Massachusetts Institut% of Technology, and the Univpiity of . Wisconsin ahead of usi' If ihe Industrial Chemists are added hi our engineering list, Which would be proper, as they are usual ly designated Chemical, Engineers in other institutions, we would take 7th place, stepping over the Uni versity of Wiscdnsin. The figures show further that this Institution stands third among all of those giving engineering instruction in the ,New England, Central and Southern States. Ithe department:of electrical en gineering has for some years varied from 6 h to 3rd place in the United States. in the Geological Museum: , i *he Department of Geology has completed, and has opened this week,' a new Geological Museum. This is located on ithe_ -second floor of the EaSt wing 'of the Min ing building, in room 205. There is od exhibition a collection of about 650 miberals arranged according to Dana's clai,sificgtion a d covering all of the more (:commo species as well as many rare on s gathered from countries represen ing all parts of the world 'There is also a col lethion of 334 rocks representing all of the common types studied ia Petrography. A number of casea contain specimens of ores, one given' up to the one collections from' Pennsylvania which were exhibited t the W rld's Fair at ;St. Louis. Particular y interesting imoag the samples re some largeL specimens from the North Star Mine -in Cali fornia, s °wink the quartz vein on either side by the enclosing :wall rock. A large case contains various types (4 coal and many fqssils of coal plants. A partical collection of fossils is inteded to , give some idea of the animals living through p ut the different geological periods. All of these specimens are mounted 'on pasteboard mounts ' which add greatly to their appearance. Sevieral relief maps nave been placed in the room, 'the Most im t portant being- a large one iof tl:4 State of Penni_ylvania showiing not only the topography of the state; but also the location and distribution of the oil, coal, and gas fields. The walls of the roe will be decorated with picture s among which will be nine large ones pre sented to the Department of Ge ology by the Pennsylvania Railroad, -showing views along their lines which illustrate the Geology of the State. The arrangement of the 'material in this museum, and the shifting and rearrangement bf other collec tions has entailed a vast amount of worts, but it is hoped that ; 'the mu seum wilkprove to be of consider able value to students of Geology.
