Though this greeting is some what late, The Collegian wishes to extend 10 - its readers, in this the fiiit issue of the new year, the hope that 1909 may be the best year that they haVe ever known. If a retro spect of the past year shows things to be regretted, the only logical course of ,action would seem to be to strive-for. better things during the year - to come. In order that 1909 may be a year of progress in the work of the col lege, it is to be honed that our representatives in the Legislature may realize the needs of the institu tion, and how essential the support of the state is in furthering the work so well begun. They may rest as sured that wise and careful economy will be used in the expenditure of the funds. Pennsylvania is today a THE STATE COLLEGIAN great and rich state, and it is only right that her college should not be hampered in the work of educating young men and women. The Young Men's Christian As sociation is to be congratulated on securing Mr. Frank N. D. Buchman to fill the position of general secre tary. The work of the Association has been carried on very success fully since the first of the year by the student officers, but it should be still more successful under the management of one who can devote his whole time to the work. Mr. Buchman's experience fits him exceptionally well for work among young men, and we predict great progress for the Y. M. C. A. under his leadership. We also extend to the new secre tary a hearty welcome and hope that his stay here will be filled with pleasure and profit to himself. A Letter From "Farmer" Ross 'OB The following letter has been re ceived from W. G. Ross 'OB, who is now in Hawaii. We wish to give hearty endorsement to the suggestion which he makes, and will be glad to receive and publish letters of this character. Honolulu, H. 1., Dec. 8, 1908 Editor State Collegian:— I receive the Collegian regularly and though it is two weeks old I can assure you that no part of it is over looked—even the "ads" have news in them. Of course we are all interested in things at State and the Collegian keeps us well informed as to the doings there. When one leaves State he is interested in his class mates and others who may have gone before him or who may follow him. Now I have a suggestion to make. State's Alumni areAncominwscat tered all over the world. We'Vaii 7 not all write to each other but we can all write to the Collegian, onceza year at least, and in this manner keep each other informed of what is doing. Short letters, even! paragraph, often tell much and know would be welcomed by the editor. Why can't we have more of these notes ? All is prosperous here with us in the College of Hawaii under the di rection of President Gilmore. 'Three of the thirteen faculty members are State men. Morgan 'O5 is in charge of chemistry and Severance 'OB 10s charge of Physics. We had the pleasure, a short time ago, of-';a day's visit from Weigle 'OB whO was enroute for the Philippines. ',I can assure you that it is very pleas, ant to have a classmate call on you when you are so far from acquain* ances. With best wishes I am sin cerely, "Farmer" Ross' 'OB CALENDAR.
